LT’s New Year Sports Thoughts

Opinion, Team FYN Sports

To quote Eddie Murphy in “Trading Places,” “Merry New Year” I know the New Year is a few days old, but that’s okay, my New Year doesn’t begin until after the bowl season. Speaking of bowl games, did anybody actually go to bowl games this year? There were quite a few bowl games that had more empty seats than a Jennifer Aniston movie. The big game of course is the national championship game that will crown an unprecedented sixth straight SEC national championship. The SEC has become the Yankees, Lakers, Celtics, and Redwings of college football. Outside of the southeast, everybody hates SEC teams more than the Kardashians hate anonymity. I for one was surprised that Ok St. was not voted in to the game, due to that aforementioned hatred of the best conference in college football.

I must say that I haven’t watched nearly as many bowl games this year, much like the fan bases of those teams in the bowl games, mostly because I have three babies (a two year old son, and a pregnant wife who is the baby out of 10). However, I did see West Virginia absolutely demolish the ACC’s chances at ever being considered a real football conference.

70-33, are you kidding me? Rhetorical question obviously, but seriously, they the Ed Lover “C’mon Son” face. Was Clemson still on South Beach, because the Tigers tails were thoroughly handed to them by the Mountaineers? That may have been the most embarrassing loss I’ve ever seen. With Va. Tech’s loss to Michigan, although in overtime, the ACC is 2-13 all time in BCS bowls. Wow that’s staggering, and disgusting at the same time. By the way, I think West Virginia just scored again!

Now as many people know I am a die hard Falcons fan, and I must admit I am very concerned with the upcoming playoff game against the “New York football Giants,” to quote a portly loquacious host on the “four letter network.” I worry that Matt Ryan is going to get lit up like that burglar that got shot by the mom with the newborn. The Giants have a plethora of defensive linemen who get to the quarterback early and often. The Falcons’ offensive line is mediocre at best; therefore I don’t have a great deal of confidence about our chances in New Jersey, where the Giants actually play for those who don’t know.

Speaking of the NFL playoffs, I’m looking forward to the match up between Tears Tebow and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Two very good defenses will be facing off. The Steelers may have its work cut out for it, due the fact that Rashard “Probably Needs to Stay Off Twitter” Mendenhall, is out for the year, and safety Ryan Clark, who played 98.7% of the Steelers defensive snaps, not playing do to Denver’s high altitude having adverse affects on his sickle cell condition. The Steelers are also going into Denver with “Big Ben the Bengal Bruiser” hobbling like an extra from Digital Underground’s “Humpty Dance” video. Tears Tebow may have some magic, but of course I hope the Steelers make him cry, like well him.

Now I admit to being more “Homer” than Bart’s dad, so I have to talk about my beloved Hawks, and how Jeff Teague has become the opposite of Chad Ochocinco in New England and Tammy from “Basketball Wives.” He’s a definitely a factor, as is the Hawks’ defense. I’ve been very impressed, especially with Tracy McGrady Hospital, who I must admit has played much better than I expected so far. The Hawks have been getting after it on the defensive end, and proved it against the vaunted Miami Heat, in South Beach, where, once again, the Clemson Tigers must steal be hanging out. Now I know we lost to the Bulls, despite leading by 19 points at one point; however, those guys were playing on dead legs, and just ran out of gas after playing six games in eight days, so it’s forgivable. I’m looking forward to seeing if this team can do something, despite having the worst ownership in the league.

Once again I have to apologize to my readers for the lack of recent columns, in my Rakim voice, “It’s been a long time I shouldn’t have left you,” but in my defense I’ve been busier than Bernie Madoff’s lawyers. And to all those who want me at events that I just can’t make, send me a some pictures and a quick summary and I’ll post quicker than TMZ with some celebrity gossip. Until the next time, Go Falcons, F.U.F. and HOOTIE HOO!!!
