Pickens Puffs No Smoke, Magically Mangles Bobcats: "Nettes" Nip Lady "Cats" 51 - 35: Dragons Drag Bobcats 73 - 52

The Pickens Dragons and Dragonettes took care of business against their biggest rival on Friday night, as both varsity teams as well as the junior varsity teams came out on top against the Gilmer Bobcats and Lady Cats. The first of the varsity games featured the Nettes and the Lady Cats. Gilmer stayed with the Nettes in the first half of play, trailing by what would have been two points at halftime before Pickens freshman Haley Kalson hit sophomore Sarah Smith, who then put up a two-point buzzer beater to give the home Nettes a 27-23 advantage.

Pickens came out in the second half determined to put the game away, and that’s exactly what they did, outscoring the Lady Cats 24-12 in the remaining two quarters to win the game by a final score of 51-35.

Junior Danielle Goss led the Nettes in scoring with twenty-one points. Sophomore Sarah Smith ended the game with a team-leading thirteen rebounds.

Following the girl’s game was the much anticipated matchup between the Dragons and Bobcats, two teams that had proven time and time again that they had the potential to beat any opponent they faced.

With the support of a rocking crowd at Pickens High School, the Dragons came out determined to come out on top, leading 20-17 after the first quarter and 40-27 at halftime. The fans in attendance, which nearly set the gym at full capacity, wouldn’t see a miraculous comeback in this one, as Pickens put up 17 points in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth to ensure a big victory.

The Dragons won the game 73-52, and as soon as the scoreboard hit 0:00 the majority of the student section, ecstatic about beating Gilmer, stormed the court in celebration.

Senior Sam Crawford had one of his best games in his impressive high school career, finishing the game with 30 points and ten rebounds. Senior Wesley Easterwood, who was responsible for assisting several of Crawford’s shots, had a good game as well, finishing with twenty points, seven rebounds, and nine assists.

The Nettes and the Dragons’ next games are on January 17th when they hit the road to take on the Allatoona Buccaneers. The girl’s game will start at 6:00, and the boy’s game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30.
