Marty Callahan Running For District 1 Commissioner Seat

Featured Stories, Politics

I, Jerry Lamar (Marty) Callahan, Jr., would like to take this opportunity to announce that I will be running for the District 1 (west side) Post Commissioner seat for Pickens County in the July Republican primary on July 31, 2012.
I am 46 years old and was raised since birth in Pickens County. I graduated from Pickens High School in 1983, and graduated from University of West Georgia in 1987. Upon graduation, I started working at State Farm Insurance, where I am presently employed. I was hired as a State Farm Agent in Rome, Ga. in 1993, and worked there for six years before I was able to happily move back home and continue being a State Farm Agent. While in Rome, I was active in schools, chamber of commerce and other civic groups, volunteer coaching at recreation department, and at our church. I made the choice to move back to Pickens County to live and raise my girls because I value what Pickens County has to offer us. We are blessed with safe quality schools to educate our children, churches to worship as we please, low crime rate, and beautiful mountains and weather that are the envy of many. Friends often refer to this area as God’s country. I agree.

I feel my experience as a business owner and taxpayer, my love for this county, and my participation in the following activities, qualifies me to serve in this Post: Current member of Downtown Development Authority of Jasper. Past Chairman of Directors for Pickens County Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Georgia Marble Festival, Past President and Treasurer of the Jasper Optimist Club, Past President of Pickens High School Basketball Tip Off Club, active Board Member of Pickens Habitat for Humanity, and active member of Jasper Rotary Club of Jasper. I am an active member and Deacon of Jasper First Baptist Church and have volunteered many years as a recreation coach for Pickens County.

My wife is Lana Chumley Callahan, who is a teacher and coach in Pickens County. I have two wonderful daughters. Abbey graduated from Pickens High School in 2010 and is currently in her second year at University of West Georgia . Claire is a freshman at Pickens High School. My parents are the late Jerry L. Callahan, Sr. and Sue Callahan of Jasper. My brother is Michael Callahan, who graduated from Pickens High School in 1989 and University of West Georgia in 1993. If elected to this Post, my goals will be to keep the special things we now enjoy in Pickens and to help see them get even better. Recreation and outdoor activities for our children, adults, and our large number of senior citizens, will be a passion of mine, while keeping an eye on our finances in these tough economic times. A survey said that as many as 7,000 people travel out of the county every day to earn a living. I would like to encourage a comprehensive study to see what we could do to bring more jobs to Pickens. In my line of work Im already involved with a group of citizens working on a community storm shelter for the Jerusalem/ Hinton area due to the number of tornado’s in the past. I ask for your vote in the Republican Primary on July 31, 2012.
