Middle School Dragons Heat Up PHS Gym

The Jasper Middle School and Pickens County Middle School Dragonettes and Dragons basketball teams met in the Pickens High School Gym. The teams win 2-2 on the day, with Jasper winning the 7th grade girls’ and 8th grade boys’ games, and Pickens winning the 7th grade boys and 8th grade girls’ games.The day began with a game between the 7th grade girls teams. PCMS’ Allie Stephens either scored or assisted on every PCMS basket in the first quarter. PCMS led 10-2 after the first.

JMS woke up in the second quarter, outscoring PCMS 8-4 to cut the lead to 14-10 at half-time.

Jasper tied the game in the third, thanks to a buzzer beating put back basket by Shae Chadwick just as the third came to a close, with the score 18-18. Chadwick’s put back basket to open the fourth gave Jasper the lead for the first time and for good.

Jasper outscored PCMS 10-5 in the fourth, securing the 28-23 JMS victory.

The 7th grade boys’ game beginning mirrored the girls’ game, as PCMS raced out to an 8-2 first quarter lead. Andy Weaver had half of the PCMS first quarter points.

The PCMS defense held fast, as JMS was only able to score three more points in the second. PCMS led 14-5 at half time, and 28-13 at the end of third.

Jasper’s Dragons did cut into the lead in the fourth. A three pointer by Dillan Huffman cut the lead down to eight, 32-24. Cody Maxnis followed with a put back lay up that cut the lead to six; however, Chase Simmons sealed the deal with a late lay up. PCMS won 35-28.

The 8th grade girls’ game began with an opening lay up by PCMS’ Tessa Duncan. Raven Sparks answered with a jumper to tie the game at 2-2. Jasper outscored PCMS 15-7 the rest of the period, including a quarter buzzer beating three from Kaitlin Redman.

PCMS’s Dragons came out on fire in the second quarter. A put back bucket by Mackenzie Hampton followed by a three from Autumn Young cut the Jasper lead to three.

Taylor Wigington tied the game with a three, at 17-17. A free throw from PCMS’ Kirsten Elrod gave PCMS its first lead of the game; however, Jacey Moss gave Jasper the half time lead with a jumper. Jasper led 19-18 at half-time.

PCMS outscored Jasper 11-5 in the third to take a 29-24 lead into the fourth. PCMS held the lead through out and won 44-34.

The 8th grade boys’ game began with a 6-0 run by Jasper. PCMS’ stopped the bleeding with a three by Ryan Wofford. However, three quick points from Jasper’s Travis Huffman sparked a 16-2 Jasper run. Jasper led 22-5 at the end of the first.

Jasper continued to stay hot leading by 38-6 at the half, and cruising to a 41-8 victory.
