Down to the Wire: Dragons and Nettes Frustrate Fannin

The Dragonettes and Dragons traveled to Blue Ridge on Tuesday and came away on the night with a 2-0 record, as the Dragonettes dominated the Lady Rebels and the Dragons made the most out of a great first half and held on for a close victory. The first game of the evening featured the Dragonettes and the Lady Rebels in a contest that got out of a hand faster than the home Lady Rebels would have probably hoped.

Pickens started the game on a real hot streak, outscoring Fannin 12-6 in the first quarter of play. The second quarter saw the Nettes keep the Lady Rebels on the ropes thanks to great plays on offense and an outstanding defensive effort, outscoring the team 25-9 to lead the game 37-15 going into the locker room.

Now ready to seal the deal, the Dragonettes started the third period on a 4-0 run and rode the momentum to sixteen points, leaving the score at 53-30 going into the fourth.

Clearly in control, the Dragonettes slowed it down in the fourth quarter but still made plenty of impressive plays, putting up eleven points on their way to a 64-46 road win.

Danielle Goss led the Dragonettes in scoring with twenty-nine points in the victory. Goss also had six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Next up in scoring was both Sarah Smith and Haley Kalson, who finished the game with eight points each. The two combined for thirteen rebounds and seven assists.

Kalson made the most of her defensive pursuit yet again, coming up with three steals in the game.

Following the Nettes’ victory was the matchup between the Dragons and the Rebels in a contest that would test Pickens’ ability to play a full thirty-two minutes of basketball.

The Dragons followed the Dragonettes’ blueprint for scoring in the first, putting up twelve points compared to Fannin’s six. The best Pickens had to offer showed itself in the second quarter, as the team put up fifteen points, including a great three-point buzzer beater by Jacob Stephens, on their way to a 27-14 halftime lead.

Now holding onto a comfortable advantage, the Dragons did not take their foot off the pedal in the third, scoring ten points to leave the score at 37-25.

Fannin was not about to stand down to Pickens on this night, roaring back to within three points as the game clock counted down to just seconds remaining in the game.

As tense as the situation got for the Dragon fans in attendance, a great defensive gameplan for the final play left Fannin with a less-than-desirable three-point attempt that failed to hit the rim, allowing the Dragons to breathe a sigh of relief and escape with a 47-44 victory.

Jacob Stephens had one of his best games as a Dragon, scoring thirteen points—including the buzzer beater before the half—and coming down with five rebounds in the contest.

Shannon Brooks and Tyjai Howell did their part to provide Pickens with a win, finishing the game with a combined total of fourteen points and eleven rebounds.

Four Pickens players—Howell, Brooks, Stephens, and David Culbreth—recorded five rebounds or more in the win.

The Dragonettes and Dragons hit the court again on Saturday when they travel to Cumming to take on the West Forsyth Lady Wolverines and Wolverines. The Dragonettes vs Lady Wolverines game is scheduled to start at 6:00 with the boys’ game following its conclusion.
