The Pickens High School Dragonettes and Dragons basketball teams faced off with the hated rivals from Gilmer. While the “Nettes” lit up the nets, winning 53-47, the Dragons’ fire was extinguished in a 67-61 double overtime loss.The Dragonettes came out on fire running out to a 7-2 early lead. The Lady “Cats” crept back slowly; however, a buzzer beater as the first period came to a close by Haley Kalson put Pickens up 16-10 going into the second.
The “Nettes” continued to stay hot, as Pickens’ Danielle Goss was unstoppable on the inside. She finished with 23 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. The Dragonettes led by 10, 31-21 at half time.
The 2013 Pickens High School Hall of Class was introduced at halftime of the Dragonettes’ game. The class includes: 1998 Graduate, Keisha Hall Cassese; former coach Roy Cowart; the 1974 state championship Dragonettes basketball team; and the late coach D.B. Carroll.
The Lady “Cats” adjusted and cooled off the “Nettes’” offense in the third quarter. Pickens did not score until Kadie Mullinax’s lay-up with 2:43 left in the third quarter. The Pickens’ lead decreased to five, 39-34, going into the fourth quarter.
2013 HOF CLASS
Gilmer came back to tie the game 47-47 after a three, with 1:20 left in the game; however, Makayla Angel sealed the win with six straight free throws, the last six points of the game and Angels’ first and final points of the game.
Goss’ 23 points led all scorers. Kalson had nine points, dished eight dimes, and had three steals. Kadie Mullinax led the team in steals with four.
The boy’s game was a close battle throughout, as neither team was able to fully gain an advantage until the end. The first quarter ended Pickens leading by one, 11-10, going into the second period.
The Bobcats briefly took the lead before Jacob Stephens’ three tied the game, 18-18, with 2:40 left in the first half. Shannon Brooks put the team up 20-18; however, two Gilmer free throws saw the game tied 20-20 at half time.
The Dragons held the “Cats” paws to Pickens’ flames in the third, inching out a five point lead, 35-30, going into the fourth.
Pickens was unable to fully pull away as the “Cats” kept clawing. The Dragons lead by six, 46-39, with 3:05 left in the fourth quarter; however an 8-2 GHS run saw the game tied 48-48 as regulation came to a close.
Each team scored six points in the back and forth first overtime period; however the Dragons got outscored 13-7 in the second overtime. GHS won 67-61.
Stephens led the Dragons with 17 points. Tyjai Howell led all rebounders with 12, seven defensive. Brooks came off the bench to score 15 points. David Culbreth led the team in steals with four. Pickens picked up 15 total steals.
