The Pickens High School Dragonettes and Dragons basketball teams thoroughly thrashed the Bulldogs of Cedartown at home. The Dragonettes won 68-59 and the Dragons drug the “Dawgs” 53-35.The Dragonettes began on fire, running out to a 6-2 early first quarter lead. Cedartown creeped pulled within one, with 3:35 left in the first quarter; however back to back three pointers from Pickens’ Kadie Mullinax and Makayla Angel put the “Nettes” up 11-6. The period ended with Pickens leading 13-8.

Pickens pilfering press produced a preposterous plethora of picked pockets for the nabbing “Nettes.” The Lady Bulldogs were frustrated by the Dragonettes full court press throughout the night.

The “Nettes” increased the lead to 11, 21-10, with 6:28 left in the first half after, Olivia LeMieux and Sarah Smith took turns trading assits to each other on back to back possessions. The Lady Bulldogs called time out immediately, to no avail. Pickens led 36-20 at half time.

The Lady Bulldogs could not stop the outside shooting of Angel and Mullinax, both finished with nine points a piece, all on three pointers. Cedartown also had no answer Danielle Goss working both inside and outside, she finished with 20 points, nor Sarah Smith’s impressive defense in the press. She also added 15 points.

Pickens pulled away to a 52-39 lead going into the fourth quarter and finished with a 65-53 win.

In between the games the “Senior Night” ceremony took place, where the seniors from the dance, cheerleading, girls and boys basketball teams were all honored.

The boys’ game began as a back and forth battle. The Bulldogs drew first blood with a three pointer. Pickens answered with a put back basket by Tyjai Howell. A Jacob Stephens put the Dragons up 5-3 after an “And 1” three point play, with 5:54 left in the first.

A 6-2 run by Cedartown saw the Bulldogs leading 11-7 with 2:28 left in the first period; however a Tyler Urlaub buzzer beating three at the close of the period cut the lead to one, and the Dragons trailed 11-10 going into the second quarter.

Pickens picked up the press in the final two minutes of the first and began the second with it. The tenacious defense combined with Stephens repeatedly driving unimpeded to the basket like Miss Daisy was riding shotgun, saw the Dragons lead by five 22-17 at half time.

The third quarter saw the Dragons open with a 5-0 run. After a Cedartown time out, Pickens picked right back up finishing the quarter with a 41-29 advantage. The Dragons then cruised to a 55-36 victory.

Stephens led the Dragons with 14 points. David Culbreth had 12, with two three pointers. Howell, Wesley Sparks, and Shannon Brooks all finished with six.
