St. Paddy’s Day Benefit Nets $10,000 to Prevent Child Abuse

Emerald green certainly was the color of choice as 125 revelers celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at the Luck o’ the Irish Casino Night on March 16th to benefit Prevent Child Abuse Pickens. Sconti Point Clubhouse at Big Canoe was jumping with the lively music of Keltic Kudzu and enchanting Step Dancers from the Irish Dance Troupe. The event netted just under $10,000 for the charitable organization. 100% of this money will go directly to services for the children.

With their admission ticket, the nearly sellout crowd received two drink tickets, $1,000 in casino money and access to a delicious buffet including a prime rib carving station, live music and Irish dancers. Tables for Black Jack, Roulette, Poker and Craps provided rollicking entertainment and the opportunity to increase ones holdings. At the end of the night the casino dollars were used to purchase raffle tickets for numerous prizes including an original oil painting, vacation in the Dominican Republic, golf outings, dining packages, etc.

Prevent Child Abuse Pickens was founded 17 years ago with the mission to stop abuse and neglect before it starts and promote early school readiness. Primary programs are Footsteps for Families and Parents as Teachers, designed to greet every expectant mother and provide her guidance, parenting education and family support throughout pregnancy until the child enters kindergarten. “We believe that school readiness does not begin a week before the start of kindergarten. It is a process that begins before birth,” states Margy Lohman, Executive Director and Founder. Currently there are 20+ families participating in this program. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, there is a waiting list of 52 more families needing support.
