Memorial Day Service Held at Sunrise Memorial Gardens

Pickens County held a tribute on Monday May 26th, Memorial Day called “Honoring Our Fallen & Their Families” at the Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper. Despite the heavy rains during most of the proceedings, it did not dampen anyone’s spirits.The program began at 10:00 with Jacob Clark, Commandant MCL/Det. 1280, as the master of the cermony. The prayer was lead by Rev. Robert Sell, USA, SP5, Living Word Church. The flags (Colors) were done by the Metro-Atlanta Young Marines, lead by Sgt. Scott. The national athem was sung by Linda Stephens. The welcoming address was given byt Arlen Rens, Past Commandant, MCL/Det.1280. The crowd then sang “America the Beautiful”, followed by the Jacob Clark introducing the special speaker, Lt. Col. (ret.) Ron Mastin.

Lt. Col. Ron Mastin gave a heartfelt speech about his service to his county. He was shot down north of Hanoi in 1967 and was a POW until 1973. He is a true patriot.

After Lt. Col Mastin gave his speech there was the presentation of wreaths done by various veteran’s groups. The 21 gun salute followed, by the DAV Honor Guard, ending the service with Taps, by Pat. Gallagher. The Veterans Groups of Pickens County sponsors were the American Legion Post 149, Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League, North Georgia Mountains Detachment 1280 and Women Who served.
