County May Consider Expansion of the School Tax Exemption Policy

During the Thursday ‘Working’ meeting of the Pickens County Board of Commissioners, expansion of the circumstances in which elderly citizens are not required to pay school tax was considered. Currently, citizens older than 62 years of age can apply to be exempted from the tax if their household income is less than $25,000 per year.

Citizen attendee Tony Chastain asked that policy be expanded citing increased ‘cost of living’ expenses for those on a ‘fixed income’.

The board discussed an income expansion range of between $30,000 and $35,000 per year.
The matter will be discussed further during the July 17th meeting of the board.

Commissioner Jones said that the matter would have to be addressed with the school board.
