Lion’s Club Makes 4th of July Sizzle

Thelma (Bay) Cagle is getting teary as she talks about why she loves 4th of July. She has orchestrated the stage events for the park celebration and, despite the heat and the early hour she rose, she remains cheery and grateful.

I love my country and I love my community. None of this could have happened if we didn’t have a lot of community support.

Club President, Darleen Handy, agrees.

These events build community. Everyone wants to work together to make things great.

The events of the day began at 10 a.m. with a parade. Handy called the turnout “fabulous.”

The crowd then moved to Lee Newton Park where food and craft booths dotted the grass. On stage were the varied and impressive talents of Pickens’ residents.

Young horsewomen from the Cowboy Church of Jerusalem sang on stage. Young and diminutive Erin Kelly sang the National Anthem while riding a horse! These cuties spent their off time galloping beautiful horses in the back quarter of the field.

Hard and fast rock signaled some serious kicks on stage by the North Georgia ATA Martial Arts group. They ‘karate chopped’ wood blocks and fought each other off in order to encourage others to take up the hobby.

Calvary Gates (previously known as the Calvary Trio) featured some soulful gospel sung by Rev. John Foster, Robert Mc Clure, and Truman Roach. An audience member referred to the group as “a capella beauty with a purpose.”
