Four school resource officers (SRO’s) were recognized at last Thursday’s monthly BOE meeting.
Sergeants Chris Leake (Lead SRO), and Deputies Jerald Young, Charles Gilette, and Scott King were recognized by the board.
Leake could not attend but told FYN:

It’s a joy to work in the school system. The [school] system has made it easier to keep our schools safer. There is no way we could do it without working as a team.

The BOE contracts with the Sherriff’s Department to provide four officers at the middle schools and the high school.

SRO’s provide a visible presence of law enforcement at the schools but also initiate and maintain relationships with students in order to help them develop conflict resolution skills.

They also help direct traffic, supervise school events, assist with truancy issues and conduct drug searches.
