Gilmer, Pickens Split Match

PHS Tennis, Team FYN Sports

The Gilmer High School tennis team hosted the Pickens Dragons for a cold, snowy match last Thursday.

The Bobcats picked up a 3-2 victory, while the Dragonettes downed the Lady Cats by the same margin.

In boys singles action, Riley Hice defeated Dragon Stephen Jordan 6-3, 6-0. Bobcat Issac Hensley bested Blue Goodman 6-0, 6-1, while Dusty Ray downed Henry Moore 6-0, 6-0, to give Gilmer a sweep in singles matches.

Pickens picked up its two boys victories in doubles matches. The combination of Sam Barber and Skyler Denton beat Carter Hice and Noah Chastain 6-2, 6-1, while the duo of Grady Pearson and Kyle Baker won a 6-4, 4-0 match over Cole Edmondson and Chandler Cantrell, which was called early due to inclement weather.

The Dragonettes took two out of three singles matches from the Lady Cats. Ginny Morris defeated Ally Davis 6-2, 6-3, before Lady Cat Kali Malham downed Emma DiPuma 6-0, 6-4. Ashley Hamby then beat Hope Bobak 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles matches, Kendal and Peyton Avery won a hard-fought 6-3, 6-2, 10-5 contest over Hannah Thomas and Chancey Davis, while Gilmer duo Katie Marick and Katie Sheahan won a 6-2, 1-0 affair over Sarah Prather and Katie Cowert, which was also called early due to weather conditions.

“Overall, I was very pleased with the way we played,” said Gilmer head coach Donna Parks. “It was brutally cold, so everyone was a little off their game. We are struggling in getting our boys doubles teams matched up just right. We are going to have to figure out who plays best and then who plays best with who. So many of our players are so equally matched.”

Parks continued, “On the girls side, I think our doubles teams are doing very well together, but that’s not to say we don’t have others that can step up and challenge them. With so little court time to practice (due to weather), it’s hard for them to show their true potential. Our singles girls are still a little rusty, too. I expect that all the players, boys and girls, will start showing much improvement in the coming weeks, since the weather is looking to be a little warmer and dryer. I have great expectations for both teams this year and believe they will go above and beyond their showing last year.”
