‘Nettes Kick Off Holiday Tournament With Win

Early this morning, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Blue Ridge to take part in the Fannin Mountain Top Holiday Classic. This three day tournament began today, and will go through Friday. The ‘Nettes 1st opponent, would be the Lady Paladins of Fellowship Christian. Fellowship Christian, is in Class-A, & came in to the ball game 5-3 on the season while the ‘Nettes came in at 6-5.

 

In the 1st quarter, the early tip time had a little effect on the ‘Nettes offense as the Lady Paladins took an early lead. Pickens would be able to shake it off by the end of the frame as Fellowship Christian took a 19-14 lead into the 2nd. The ‘Nettes, got things going more consistently in the 2nd quarter. Pickens, would outscore the Lady Paladins 13-6, to take a 27-25 lead in to the half.

 

In the 3rd, the offense for Pickens kept up the pace it began to set in the 2nd quarter. The ‘Nettes, outscored Fellowship Christian 24-14 to extend their lead to 51-39, going to the 4th. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes were able to stop any comeback attempt by the Lady Paladins, and come away with a 63-52 win.

 

Leading the way for the ‘Nettes were:

Torie Williams: 18 points, 3 assists, & 5 rebounds

Mykenzie Weaver: 12 points, 1 assist, 3 rebounds, & 3 steals

Shelby Cook: 9 points, 1 assist, 6 rebounds, & 1 block

Taylor Wigington: 8 points, 4 assists, & 6 rebounds

Mackenzie Hampton: 8 points, 15 rebounds, & 1 block

Ashley Nelson: 4 points, 2 assists, & 4 rebounds

Allie Stephens: 2 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound, & 1 steal

Bailey Payne: 2 points, & 2 assists

Autumn Young: 3 assists, 1 rebound, & 1 steal

Tessa Duncan: 7 rebounds

 

The ‘Nettes will advance and play the Gordon Lee Lady Trojans tomorrow at 4 p.m. A win seals a spot in the championship game on Friday. Gordon Lee is 5-5 on the season.
