Dragons Flame Out in Gilmer

The Pickens Dragonettes and Dragons soccer teams traveled to Gilmer High School to take on the Bobcats. The Dragonettes fell in out a 5-4 overtime shoot out, and the Dragons dropped a 3-2 decision after leading two nil.Gilmer’s Lady Bobcats drew first blood with 5:24 left in the first half, with Jacey Aaron’s goal. The score would remain 1-0 for the rest of the half.

The Dragonettes turned up the heat with 29:48 in the second half when Erin Dean scored. A mere three minutes and 44 seconds later, the Lady “Cats’” Elizabeth Landaverde put the home team up 2-1.

The Dragonettes refused “go quietly into that good night,” as Olivia Lemieux scored the game tying goal with 4:28 left in the second half. Regulation ended with the game tied 2-2.

After neither team scored in overtime, two five minute halfs, the game resulted in a shootout, with each team getting five one on one shots on the goal. The Lady “Cats” made three of five. Conversely, the Dragonettes made two of five. CeCe Jenkins secured the 5-4 win with the last goal of the game.

The boys’ game began with a strong defensive effort from both teams, as neither team was able to punctuate the goal in the first half.

The second half began with gusto in Gilmer as the Dragons got hot early in the half. Tyler Bell and Titus Henderson each scored a goal within the first five minutes of the period. Putting Pickens in position to secure it’s first ever boys’ soccer victory over the rival Bobcats.

Gilmer’s Rigoberto Reynoso scored on a one on one penalty kick to pull Pickens closer to the “Cats’” claws with 22:20 left in the game.

The Bobcats tied the game with 5:03 left and took the lead for good with 3:25 left. The Bobcats held off the Dragons to secure the 3-2 victory.
