The Pickens County School System (PCCS) gave out the award for the highest school attendance score of the year at last night’s September 13th Board of Education meeting. Last night at the Board of Education meeting, PCSS Superintendent Dr. Ben Desper presented Tate Elementary School Principal Dr. Deb Longshore with the 2011-2012 System Wide Highest Yearly School attendance award. Tate Elementary School had an attendance score of 96.69% last year, making it the school with the highest attendance rate in Pickens County.

Also during the meeting, PCSS Attendance Officer Shelley Cantrell recognized both Harmony Elementary School Principal Sherry Martin and Jasper Middle School Principal Neil Howard. Cantrell said that Harmony Elementary School won the August Attendance Award with a score of 97.84 compared to Jasper Middle School’s 97.83, beating them out by only 1 hundredth of a point!

Cantrell also reported that during the 2011-2012 school year, Pickens County Schools had a decrease of 26 students, from 326 to 300, which missed 15 or more days compared to the 2010-2011 school year. Overall, she says that last year the school system had seven percent of its students miss 15 or more days, but this year the school system has a system wide goal of five percent.

FYN would like to congratulate both Tate Elementary School, Harmony Elementary School, and Jasper Middle School for its excellence in attendance.
