The Pickens Dragonettes and Dragons got the job done on day two of the ETC Tipoff Tournament on Monday, prevailing in commanding fashion in their matchups with the Copper Basin Cougars and Lady Cougars.
The Dragonettes and Lady Cougars’ contest turned ugly quickly, as a highly contested first quarter was followed by an offensive explosion of nineteen points that gave Pickens a 41-11 advantage at halftime.
Pickens refused to take their foot off the pedal in the second half, putting up twenty-nine points on offense while only allowed a grand total of seven by Copper Basin. The result was a 60-18 victory that put Coach Kevin Jacobs’ Dragonettes at 2-0 in the season-opening tournament.
Sarah Smith showed off her skills once again in this game, scoring eighteen points and pulling down twelve rebounds in the victory. Following close behind in scoring were Haley Kalson and Danielle Goss, who both finished the game with eleven points.
The Dragons then took the court with the chance to pull off the sweep of Copper Basin, and they obliged this opportunity.
This inexperienced Dragons’ team played their best game of the young season against the Cougars, following up a 26-24 lead in the first half with 21 points in the third quarter en route to a 69-43 victory.
Tyjah Howell led Pickens in scoring and rebounding with thirteen points and eight rebounds in the win. Right behind Howell as far as stats are concerned were Clay Wigington, who had eleven points with three rebounds, and Shannon Brooks, who had nine points and six rebounds.
The Dragons and Dragonettes will finish off the tournament on Tuesday with matchups against the Gilmer Bobcats and Lady Cats. The girls’ game is set to start at 6:00 p.m. with the boys’ game beginning at its conclusion.
