Nettes Win, Dragons Lose in Battles With West Forsyth

The Pickens Dragons and Dragonettes had mixed results in their first hope games of the 2012-2013 season, as the Dragonettes outlasted the West Forsyth Lady Wolverines and the Dragons made a late run but just could not top the Wolverines.The opening game of the day pitted the Dragonettes against the Lady Wolverines. The first quarter saw Pickens fight hard against a talented West Forsyth squad, resulting in the home Nettes leading the game 10-5 at the quarter’s conclusion.

Fueled by excellent play for both teams, the second quarter saw the Lady Wolverines slightly close the gap that the Dragonettes had established, but going into halftime Pickens held a 22-18 advantage.

Now with a chance to seal the deal in the second half, the Dragonettes wasted no energy in regards to finishing the drill, outscoring the Lady Wolverines 15-12 in the third quarter to hold a 37-30 lead. The fourth quarter was much of the same for Pickens, as the team posted fourteen points to finish off the night with a 59-44 victory.

Kadie Mullinax used her three-point shooting to her advantage on this night, draining four three-pointers to help put up eighteen points on the game, a team-high.

Sarah Smith and Danielle Goss proved the belief that rebounding leads to points, as the two combined for thirteen rebounds and twenty-seven points.

Makayla Angel had a good game in her first appearance of her senior year, draining a three point shot with a little over two minutes left in the first half. Angel also had one rebound in the win.

Next up was the matchup between the Dragons and the Wolverines, two squads that showed early on that they were prepared for battle.

The first quarter of play saw both teams slow their adversary’s offense down, resulting in West Forsyth leading by the slim margin of 8-7. The Dragons matched their seven points from the first in the second quarter, but the Wolverines offense warmed up during this time, resulting in fifteen points and a 23-14 lead.

The third quarter proved to be the highlight for the Dragons on this night, as the team outscored the Wolverines 18-13, the last two points coming on a great inbound pass from Shannon Brooks to Clay Wigington, whose shot went in just prior to the final buzzer sounding.

Now geared with the momentum and a chance to overcome a 35-32 hole, the Dragons fought hard to come away with a much-needed victory, but the Wolverines would have nothing to do with this. West Forsyth would outscore the Dragons 17-10 in the final quarter to win the game 53-42.

Ryan Curry had an excellent game for Pickens, leading the team in scoring with ten points. Curry also had one rebound and two assists in the lost.

Shannon Brooks and Clay Wigington did all they could against the Wolverines, tying for a team-high four rebounds.

Five Pickens players—Curry, Wigington, Jacob Stephens, Chris Leicht, and David Culbreth—finished the game with five or more points in the game.

The Dragons and Dragonettes hit the court again on Tuesday, when they travel to Blue Ridge to face off with Fannin. The Nettes will take on the Lady Rebels at 6:00 with the matchup between the Dragons and Rebels taking place after the girls’ game.
