Pickens Picks Up Win at Gilmer with 8 Run 7th Inning

The Pickens High School Dragonettes softball team traveled to region rival, Gilmer High School, to take on the Lady Bobcats. The “Nettes” scratched the “Cats,” scoring eight runs in the seventh inning for the come from behind victory. The junior varsity squad fell 4-2 to the JV Lady Bobcats.The JV “Nettes” got nixed by a late run by the Lady “Cats.” Two Gilmer runs scored in the bottom of the fifth secured the 4-2 win for the home team.

The varsity game began with the “Nettles” facing a 2-0 deficit after two runs scored in the bottom of the first. The “Nettes” cut the lead in half in the top of the next inning.

Pickens’ Paula Pickett walked, with one out to put a runner on first. A single from Kym Elrod put runners on first and second, followed by a sac bunt from Olivia LeMieux moved both runners over one base. Courtesy runner, Summer Riddle, in for the catcher (Pickett), scored the first Dragonets’ run for third, on a passed ball.

The Lady “Cats” returned the favor, scoring in the bottom of the second on a passed ball to increase its lead to 3-1. The lead increased to 4-1 in the bottom of the third, with an RBI double from Gilmer’s senior outfielder, Caitlin Coleman.

Stephanie Riddle’s two run homer in the top of the fifth saw the “Nettes” cut the lead to one, 4-3. The score would remain the same until the top of the seventh.

The top of the seventh saw the Dragonettes heat up and catch fire. Cheyenne Hamby lead off with a single, Kayla Howard followed with a routine ground ball; however two Gilmer errors led to Hamby standing on third, with Howard on second.

Stephanie Riddle tied the game with an RBI single, followed by Angel Dement’s RBI single that picked up Pickens’ first lead of the night, 5-4.

Haley Kalson, loaded the bases with a bunt single. Pickett picked up a three run standing double that puffed up the Pickens lead to 8-4. Elrod’s RBI bunt single made the score 9-4.

A sac ground out from LeMieux was the first out of the inning. A single from Brooke Wilson, followed by a walk by Hamby, loaded the bases. Kayla Howard’s RBI single put Pickens up 10-4.

A Fielder’s Choice at home procured Pickens second out, however an RBI single from Angel Dement put Pickens up 11-4, followed by a fly out that ended the Dragonettes hot streak.

Starting pitcher Kayla Howard, pitched a complete game, facing three batters in the bottom of the seventh, retiring all three with two fly outs and a ground out. Hamby finished with four strike outs for the game.
