Dragons Burned in First Few Games

The Pickens High School Dragons baseball team has not started the season scorching opponents, falling in four of the first five games, with the lone win coming in a 6-2 Dragons dismantling of Jackson High School.The season began with a 9-3 loss to Dawson County. The Dragons never lead as the Tigers scored a run in the first inning and added four more before the Dragons scored two runs in the top of the sixth. Each team scored one more for the final score of 9-3. Cameron Gregory, Wyatt Gooch, and Dillon Champion scored the three Dragons’ runs.

The 6-2 win over Jackson, saw the Dragons draw first blood, scoring a run in the top of the second; however, Jackson took the lead with two runs scored in the bottom of the second. Pickens picked up three runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth to cruse to victory.

Travis Huffman lead the Dragons in batting average with .667 on the day, going two for three with two runs scored and an RBI. Eric Justice pitched six of seven innings, facing 25 batters and striking out eight.

Pickens just missed a win at Madison, falling 6-5. The Dragons took a short lead with a run scored in the top of the third; however, Madison answered with three in the bottom of the same inning. A four run explosion from the Pickens offense gave the Dragons a 5-3 lead. Madison scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and Pickens could not answer in the top of the seventh, securing the loss.

Gregory lead the Dragons with a 1.000 batting average in the game going three for thee with one run scored and one RBI.

Despite an early lead, the Dragons fell to Alcovy 7-6. With each team scoring a run in the first inning the Dragons looked to catch fire in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings scoring a combined five runs for a 6-1 lead; however, Alcovy tied the game with five runs in the top of seventh and scored the winning run in the top of the ninth.

Justice pitched six innings, giving up one earned run, and striking out seven of the 26 batters he faced. Zack Herman and Champion both batted .500 going two for four. Herman scored two runs and had two RBI, while Champion scored a run and batted one in.
