Nelson to Host First Ever Public Safety Day

Lodge and Police combine forces, Press Release by Ralph O. Dennis:On June 7, 2014, the City of Nelson will host the biggest event to come to town in many years. Nelson Police Department and E. W. Hightower Lodge #679 F & AM will join forces. They are co-sponsoring the first ever Public Safety Day. The event will begin at 11 AM and end at 3 PM.

During this event, law enforcement agencies, fire agencies, the American Red Cross and the Lodge will have many activities going on. Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office will be sending their Command Center and Bear Cat. Pickens County Sheriff’s Office will have several units and their Auxiliary will have a display of the “Gator” that they are having a raffle for. Cherokee County Fire Department will have a ladder truck and their child safety unit. Jasper Police Department will have their Humvee on display.

The American Red Cross in conjunction with the lodge will have a blood drive. To schedule a time to donate a lifesaving unit, please call 770-757-0689. The Red Cross will also send their Disaster Preparedness Unit.

The Lodge will host a GAChIP event. This is a free child Identification Program. Each kit contains a printed information sheet with the data of the child, a CD with four pictures of the child, an interview for a voice print and digital fingerprints. The kit also includes a DNA swab. This activity will be in the Lodge building.
The Nelson Police Department will have their vehicles on display and their new Reserve Officer there. The Department will have free T-shirts and backpacks for the youngsters.

E. W. Hightower Lodge #679 will also have a BBQ fundraiser that day. Your choice of chicken or pulled pork with beans, slaw, bread and a drink for a donation of $7.

(If you donate blood, you will be given a discount for your meal). The Lodge will also have water and soft drinks available. A bounce house will also be available for the kids for a donation.
