Last night, the Dragons and Nettes varsity basketball team welcomed the Lady Eagles and Eagles of Etowah to the Dragon’s Den. Etowah is out of Woodstock and is in the 6A classification. These games were scrimmage games to see where the teams were at as they prepare for the upcoming 2014-15 season.

The Nettes, under the direction of new head coach Donna Enis, were first to take the court as they looked to break in some new players on the varsity team. It was back and forth action in the first quarter but the Lady Eagles would pull away to take an 8 point lead 13-5 as we headed to the 2nd quarter. The Nettes made a run in the quarter, but Etowah stretched their lead only slightly heading into halftime 29-19. Ashley Nelson and Kaitlin Redman would lead the Nettes in scoring at the half with 6 points each.

Both teams came out for the 3rd quarter much like the first half going back and forth with the Nettes cutting the lead to 8, 45-37 as we’d head to the 4th and final quarter. The Lady Eagles however would pull away in the 4th and come away with a 67-50 victory in this scrimmage. Ashley Nelson led the Nettes in scoring with 12 points off the bench hitting 4 three pointers followed by Kaitlin Redman with 11 and Haley Kalson with 7.

The Dragons team were up next as they, like the Nettes, were playing with a lot of young players and without the services of several football players who will join the team once the football season is over. The Eagles flew out to a quick start nabbing an 11 point lead after the 1st quarter 20-9 over the Dragons. The Dragons made a couple of mini runs but Etowah kept it’s lead as we went into halftime 39-18.

The Eagles again got off to a quick start in the 2nd half outscoring the Dragons 26-8 to take a 65-26 lead heading to the 4th and final quarter of play. The Dragons ended the game with a confidence boost heading into the new season outscoring the Eagles 16-8 in the 4th but Etowah took the win 73-42. Leading the Dragons in scoring were Trent Rizoti with 12 points and 7 rebounds, Holden Roop had 11 points, 2 assists, and 2 rebounds, Clay Wiggington finished with 6 points and 3 rebounds, and Doug Timms added 7 points and 2 rebounds.

The Dragons and Nettes will now prepare for their season opener Tuesday, November 18th at home as they host Dawson County. The action starts with the JV boys at 4:15 followed by the Nettes at 6 and then the Dragons at 7:30.
