The Pickens High School wrestling team traveled to Sonoraville High School on Thursday night for a pair of duals against Sonoraville and Ringgold. Both Sonoraville and Ringgold have good wrestling traditions, so Coach Grady Flanagan knew it would be a good test for his young team. The night began with a dual against Ringgold. Starting at 285 pounds, the Dragons sent out Elliott Gallagher. The senior wrestled a tough match and managed to come away with a 9-6 victory to get the night started right. Following Gallagher was sophomore phenom Koby Milner, who stepped onto the mat with a 14-1 record. He stepped off the mat just over a minute later with a pin.

After a loss at 113 and a forfeit at 120, the Dragons Lane Perry picked up a forfeit at 126 to push the Dragons’ lead to 15-12. That lead was short lived as the Dragons had to forfeit at 132 and took a loss at 138. The Dragons surged back in the lead by picking up pins at 145, courtesy of Michael Casey, and 152, courtesy of Will Logan.

A loss at 160 put Ringgold back in the lead by 3. Undaunted, the Dragons reeled off three consecutive wins, courtesy of Seniors Josh Massey, Cole Millsap, and John Holbert to seal the win. Despite losing at 220 pounds, the Dragons came away with a 45-36 win.

In the second dual of the night, the Dragons faced the Sonoraville Phoenix. Sonoraville is one of the tougher teams in AAA but was without two of their better wrestlers who were out with the flu. Koby Milner once again performed well and pushed his record to 16-1 with a pin. A loss at 113 and a forfeit at 120 put the Phoenix in front but Lane Perry tied the dual at 126.

Another forfeit at 132 was followed by a Dragons’ pin by Kyle Tidwell at 138 to tie the dual again, this time at 18 points a piece. The dragons lost at 145 and Will Logan picked up another win at 152 to keep the match tied. Unfortunately, Senior Jake Coleman was injured in his match with Ringgold so the Dragons were forced to forfeit at 160.

That allowed Sonoraville to bump their two best wrestlers up a weight class and take wins at 170 and 182. The Dragons picked up a forfeit at 195 which put them in the position of needing pins at 220 and 285. Unfortunately, neither Dragon picked up a win and the dual finished with Sonoraville on top, 54-30.

In JV action, the Dragons continued their good work as the Dragons won 13 of 17 matches on the night.
