Dragons Lose To A Tough Model Team Get Ready For Region Play

The Dragons varsity basketball team took on the Model Blue Devils in the third and final day of the Pickens Holiday Classic. Pickens, with wins over Woodstock and Fellowship Christian during the Classic, looked to end 2014 with a win and hand Model just it’s second loss on the season. The Blue Devils however, had other ideas.Model scored the first four points of the ball game until a Dragon three closed the gap to just a single digit. The Blue Devils came away with the lead after the first quarter, 14-8. The Dragons could only manage eight second quarter points as Model poured in 18 to stretch their lead to 32-16 at the half.

Twenty-one total points were scored in the third quarter as the Blue Devils outscored Pickens 12-9, as they held the lead going to the fourth, 44-25. The Dragons won the fourth quarter scoring over Model 15-14, but the lead was too much to overcome as the Blue Devils got the win, 58-40. Pickens is now 10-5 on the season and 2-3 in region play.

Leading the way for the Dragons last Tuesday were:

Travis Huffman: 10 points

Trent Rizoti: 9 points, 1 assist, and 3 rebounds

Holden Roop: 7 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound, and a steal

Walker Lawrence: 6 points, 2 assists, and a rebound

Doug Timms: 6 points, and 2 assists

Clay Wigington led the team in rebounds with 5

A long week for the Dragons starts tomorrow as they travel to Dalton to take on the Raiders of Southeast Whitfield in 7AAAA play. Tip off scheduled for 7:30 pm. Pickens will host the Panthers of Ridgeland in another big region game on Friday with the tip scheduled for 7:30 pm. The Dragons will then turn around on Saturday and travel to Blue Ridge to take on the Rebels of Fannin in non region action. Tip off for that one scheduled for 5:30 pm.
