Lordship of Christ- “The Three H’s”

Religion

I’m writing from Port Gibson, Ms (let me know where it is- Ralph doesn’t count cause I told him) where I am preparing to teach Bible and History at Chamberlain-Hunt Christian Military Academy. It is an exciting opportunity to work with young men (7-12 grades) during very formative years. Please not like TAPS where an elderly, disgruntled, retired general (played by George C. Scott) dominates and dictates the actions of young cadets- particularly the ones played by Timothy Hutton and Tom Cruise. Sean Penn is calming influence- how ’bout that! Well, so much for useless trivia. Chamberlain-Hunt is a solidly Christian educational institution. Students come from all over the world with the majority of the cadets coming from Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. Please pray for us as we seek to impact the young men for Christ. But enough about that! What about the three “H’s”? Hey, what are they? Are they hamburgers, hotdogs and hoagies? Give me a break- you sound like those Paul describes those whose “god is their belly” (go ahead- look it up in Philippians). How about Hilton, Hampton and Holiday Inn? Now you sound like the travelin’ man but not that either.

Think about Paul’s pray for the people in Colossae. Read 1:9-12 where he says that he is praying that they would be fulfilled the God’s wisdom so that they would walk in a manner that would please God. By the way, Paul uses participles to describe how: “bearing fruit”, “increasing in the knowledge of God”, “being strengthened”, and “joyfully giving thanks”. Great study by the way. But back to our study. How are we able to “walk in a manner that pleases God”? That’s where three H’s come into play.

I heard this first from my brother who by the way is an outstanding tennis teacher. I would recommend him but you would have to drive to Brookhaven, MS (might be worth it- he is really that good). In evaluating match performance with his students, my brother would use the three H’s. First, how was your “head”? He would discuss their knowledge of game, their fundamentals (strokes, movement, placement, etc.), and their strategy during the match. Someone can have beautiful strokes, or footwork, or even the best looking outfit but not do well. This is only one third- one H!

Second, he would ask them about their “heart”. He would ask questions like: were you committed to hitting your strokes correctly? did you give your best? did you fight to the end or did you give up? Did you pour out your heart on the court?

But there is a third H. David would ask them about the “hands”. In other words, he was asking them about how they actually played. Did they perform well? Did they hit the shots properly? Did they make the adjustments when needed? How did they do in the actual “heat of the contest”?

Does this make sense? Does it mean anything to you? Think about it. The three “H’s” actually relate to our “walking in a manner to please God”. Please bear with me for a moment as we discuss the H’s.

The first is the head. This describes the intellectual knowledge of Jesus Christ. Now this is important because there is only one Jesus and He is defined in the Scripture- God’s Word. He is the only begotten Son of God; the second person of the Trinity; God and Man at the same time without either nature being compromised or diminished in any way; He became flesh and blood having been conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary in order to live a perfect life on our behalf; He died a horrible sacrificial death to pay the debt we couldn’t pay; He was raised on the third day; and ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of God the Father until He returns as the conquering King!

Any other definition is wrong and provides no hope to the one who puts his trust in the “false Savior”. Our only hope is the Christ of the Scripture- there is none other! Who is the Christ in whom you have put your trust? Think about it- there is only One! But just the knowledge of Jesus doesn’t save you.

Do you remember the second H? It’s the “heart”! Is there a heart-felt commitment to the Christ of the Scripture? Do you love Him more than anything else? Remember He loved us first (1 John 4:19) and, because of that love He gave His life for us. Are you committed to Him- not just head but HEART!!!!

Where is this commitment seen? Oh grasshopper- the third H! You see to the Old Testament person, the hand represented everything they did. So the”hand” represented their actions and reactions- their “walk”. So, the head knowledge of the Christ of the Scripture and the heart-felt commitment to Him is demonstrated in the way we live our lives. Do people see in your daily affairs life that Jesus is your Lord? How about by the words that come out of your mouth? By the way you treat other people?

Think about it! Examine your life using the three H’s. And if you need a good tennis teacher, call my brother. Let’s go hit some fuzzy balls! See ya!
