‘Nettes Advance To Sweet 16 After Win Over Troup County

Last night, in front of a packed house inside the Dragons Den, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Troup County Lady Tigers in a 1st round match up in the 4-A Girls State Basketball Tournament. This marked the 1st home state basketball game for PHS since ’99-’00. Pickens came in as the #2 seed from region 6, while Troup County was the #3 seed from region 5.

 

In the first quarter, the early part saw both teams feel each other out a bit as both were not that with each other’s style of play. Midway through the frame saw Troup County get a little bit of a lead. Towards the end of the 1st, the ‘Nettes turned up the defense & went on a run to end the quarter with a 14-8 lead. To start the 2nd, Pickens continued their run from the 1st quarter, and was able to stretch their lead out even further on the Lady Tigers. Using a 12-6 quarter advantage, Pickens went into the half with a 26-14 lead.

 

In the 3rd, defense would lead to offense for the ‘Nettes as they held Troup County to 8 points in the frame. Pickens, would score 20 in the 3rd to bring their lead to 46-22 going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, both teams would score 19 points each as it was a back and forth quarter. The ‘Nettes, came away with the opening round win, 65-41.

 

Leading the way for the ‘Nettes were:

Mykenzie Weaver: 22 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds, & 4 steals

Shelby Cook: 10 points, 1 assist, 5 rebounds, 1 steal, & 1 block

Torie Williams: 8 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, & 1 block

Allie Stepehns: 8 points, 4 assists, & 7 rebounds

Ansley Parker: 8 points

Mackenzie Hampton: 6 points, 2 assists, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, & 1 block

Hattie Baker: 2 points, 1 assist, & 3 rebounds

Sarah Morris: 1 point, 1 assist, & 1 rebound

 

Pickens, will now await the winner of the Chestatee/Jefferson game. Should Chestatee win, the ‘Nettes will host that game. Should Jefferson win, Pickens will take to the road for the sweet 16. The game will be either Wednesday or Thursday of next week.

‘Nettes Finish 2nd In Region After Physical Game, Host Troup Next Friday In State Tournament

It was Region Championship Friday as the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the trip to Dalton one last time. This time, it was to face off with the #1 seeded Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins. Pickens, had already earned a home game in the first round of the 4-A State Tournament, but wanted to cap the week off with a region title.

 

In the opening quarter, the ‘Nettes got a couple of three pointers to drop to help propel them to the lead going to the 2nd, 13-6. In a tightly contested, low scoring 1st half, each team proved they belonged in this championship game. Northwest Whitfield outscored the ‘Nettes in the 2nd 11-7, but Pickens maintained the lead, 20-17 going to the break.

 

In the 3rd, there was just a total of 13 points scored between the two teams as both defenses played very well throughout the game. Despite being outscored 7-6 in the quarter by the Lady Bruins, the ‘Nettes still held on to the lead going to the 4th, 26-24. The lead would change several times in the 4th, but in the closing seconds, Northwest Whitfield was able to get a late basket to give them the win, 36-34.

Mackenzie Hampton: 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, & 1 block

Torie Williams: 6 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, & 3 steals

Allie Stephens: 6 points, 1 assist, 2 rebounds, & 1 steal

Olivia Simmons: 6 points

 

Pickens, will now get prepared to host the Troup County Lady Tigers out of region 5 in the 1st round of the 4-A State Tournament. The game will be this coming Friday, with game time still to be determined. Tickets will be $7 per GHSA rule.

‘Nettes Take 3rd In 6-AAAA After Defeating Rival Gilmer For 3rd Time This Season

Yesterday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team was once again at Southeast Whitfield High School to take part in the final day of the 2017 6-AAAA Region Tournament. Pickens, faced a familiar foe yesterday as they took on the Lady Cats of Gilmer for the 4th time on the season for the #3 seed for 6-AAAA heading into the 4-A State Tournament next week.

 

In the 1st, Gilmer, got off to a quick start in the early tip time. The Lady Cats, pounced out to a 16-9 lead over the ‘Nettes going to the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, the offense and defense picked up for Pickens. The ‘Nettes, used a 19-10 quarter advantage to take a 28-26 lead over Gilmer going to the break.

 

In a very physical 3rd quarter, both teams found success scoring. Pickens barely outscored the Lady Cats 20-17, to take a 48-43 lead going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes used another huge run to close this game out. Using a big 24-10 quarter run, Pickens, got the win, their 3rd over Gilmer on the season, 72-53.

Autumn Young: 18 points, 1 assist, 2 rebounds, & 1 steal

Taylor Wigington: 15 points, 4 assists, & 9 rebounds

Mackenzie Hampton: 12 points, 1 assist, 8 rebounds, & 1 block

Mykenzie Weaver: 8 points, 1 assist, & 2 rebounds

Torie Williams: 6 points, 4 assists, 1 rebound, & 2 steals

Shelby Cook: 6 points, 3 rebounds, & 1 block

Madison McClure: 3 points, 4 assists, & 8 rebounds

Ashley Nelson: 2 points, 3 assists, 5 rebounds, & 1 steal

 

The ‘Nettes will now wait to see where they will be off to next week for the 1st round of the 4-A State Tournament. Region 6, is facing region 8 in the first round. In the 8-AAAA Championship, Jefferson is taking on North Oconee. The ‘Nettes, will travel to whoever loses that game next week.
