Coach Chris Parker Talks Dragon Football

Sports

Coach Chris Parker sat down with Team FYN Sports to talk about Dragons youth Program and the upcoming 2018 season. Parker, being the Athletic Director for all Pickens County is really involved and excited to see these young athletes grow and be a part of the high school programs in years ahead.

One young man that Parker has seen grow and mature is Zach Goss. Goss was a 7th grader when Coach Parker started working with the youth program.  Parker said the he saw a small skinny kid that had potential and look where he is now, a Senior that has had an excellent high school career and has verbally committed to play for Tennessee Tech.

The 2018 season holds expectations just as previous seasons and Coach Parker is ready to lead his team into battle.  The Dragons start the season at home against a bigger and stronger Stone Mountain team.  The ultimate goal for Parker and his Dragons is to play their best, execute their game plan and win games.  Most importantly, put out young men who are ready to face the world after high school.

Dragons Stadium Gets New Look

Sports

The 2018 Football season will look different to all who enter the gates of Dragon Stadium this year as a multi-million dollar renovation draws closer to completion. Upon entering the stadium, the eyes of the fans will be immediately drawn to the new artificial turf that has been been put down to replace the natural grass surface that has seen many years of tackles and touchdowns.

As the history of the old field remains in the hearts of Dragons before, a new era of history will begin on Friday May 18, 2018 as the Tigers of Dawson Co. will come in as the first opponent on the new turf and will end the 2018 Spring practice session for the Dragons.  As exciting as it will be to see the Dragons take the field on Friday,  it is just as exciting to know what actually goes into creating a masterpiece.  The new turf is being completed by Deluxe Athletics.  Their name might not be known but you will definitely recognize their work. Probably the most recognized on their resume is Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.  As the home of the Falcons and Atlanta United,  the turf is obviously durable and in Dragons Stadium  it will see both football and soccer action for years to come.

The process of installing a surface such as this is fairly complex.  After the turf is unloaded from the trucks, it is placed on the ground and rolled into position.  Each roll is attached together by a rolling sewing machine and the meticulous job of putting the hash marks, numbers and logos begin.  Every hash is individually cut out of the green turf and white strips are placed using a rolling machine that heats industrial strength hot glue to secure them.  This process also occurs for the numbers, the logo in the center of the field and also for the end zone logos.  Once this is complete the turf is swept with a street sweeper to prepare the surface for the sand and rubber pellets that lie deep within the grains of the artificial grass.

As the sand starts going in, it is monitored to remain at a specific depth and the packed with a commercial roller to ensure firmness and consistency of the playing surface.  Following the sand, the crews bring out the rubber pellets to spread over the field.  After completion of layer one of pellets, a second layer of sand and pellets are applied and then swept again.  In the final process in completing the field a new technological product will be used.  Cool Play is a highly advanced pellet that has a surface temp of 35 degrees cooler than traditional pellets used in artificial surfaces.

Also new to the stadium is a state of the art 32 feet high definition Jumbo Tron video board.  This will allow player bios and game highlights to stream throughout the game while still functioning as a normal scoreboard.  Track and Field for Pickens will benefit from the renovation as well with a new track surface being installed.

The first of many non athletic events that will take place on the new surface is scheduled for May 26, 2018 with the Graduating Class of 2018 receiving their diplomas and heading out in to the world.

Walden, Laney Sign College Scholarships

PHS Volleyball, Sports

Two Pickens High School athletes signed college scholarships today, inside the PHS Old Performing Arts Center.

D.J. Walden signed to play football for the Shorter University Hawks in Rome, Ga., while Savannah Laney made Pickens history by becoming the first-ever athlete to sign a volleyball scholarship by putting her names on the dotted line to play for the Agnes Scott Scotties in Atlanta.

A recent addition to the Dragons family, D.J. Walden just joined Pickens for his senior year of football.

“It feels great,” Walden said. “It feels like all the hard work has paid off. Now it’s time to work harder, because I’m going on to the next level and I’m going to give it all I have.”

Walden has been on the gridiron since he was seven years old. He has also played basketball, but admits that football has always been number one.

“I just always had a love for football,” Walden said. “It’s my favorite sport and I love it.”

Walden looks to play either center or defensive tackle for the Division II Hawks. He also made sure to thank those that have helped him along the way.

“First, I want to thank God,” Walden boasted. “I want to thank my parents, my grandparents and my coaches. Everyone that helped to get me where I am today, because without some people, I wouldn’t have anything.”

Laney

“I’m very excited,” Laney said. “It was kind of a shock to think that something like this was possible. When I first started, I had no idea this was even going to be an opportunity. So, it’s very exciting that I’ve got this far.”

For Laney, her historic volleyball scholarship came after a more recent decision to play the sport garnered her a ride to the women’s only-Division III Agnes Scott.

Laney took up volleyball during her freshman year at PHS, after playing basketball from a young age. However, after her first year as a volleyball player, Laney was hooked and left the Dragonettes basketball team her sophomore year to focus on her new-found love.

“I like that it’s a team sport,” Laney explained. “You really have to work on yourself, as a unit. You don’t really worry about the other team. You just have to defend what they have.”

Agnes Scott was the first college Laney visited and ended up being the one that she settled on, in spite of visits to other schools. She also had a list of people to thank for helping get her where she is today.

“My mom and dad, plus Charlie Green, my recruiting agent and also, Coach Bernard for being one of my coaches,” Laney said. “But I’d also like to thank my teachers. Because for me, school has always been first and my teachers really have inspired me.”
