Dragons Fall To Gilmer In Tough Rivalry Game, Host Bruins on Friday Night

After the exciting girls game finished, it would be the guys turn as the Dragons hosted the Gilmer Bobcats. Much like the Lady Cats, the Bobcats came into the game 8-1 on the season. Pickens, came in looking to gain some momentum by defeating their rival, & moving to 2-2 in region play.


In the first, both teams traded bucket for bucket, going back and forth. Gilmer, was able to gather a 15-14 lead over the Dragons, going to the 2nd. The 2nd quarter, was much like the 1st quarter as it was very much even at times. While the Bobcats outscored Pickens 19-16 in the frame, the Dragons remained in striking distance going to the half down 34-30.


In the 3rd, the defense for the Bobcats picked up a bit. Gilmer, outscored the Dragons 22-14 in the 3rd, to stretch their lead to 56-44, going to the 4th. Gilmer, used a 16-7 4th quarter run to seal the win, 72-51.

The Dragons, will be back at home on Friday as they host the Northwest Whitfield Bruins. Tip off scheduled for 8:30 pm.


Dragons Fall To LaFayette, Host Bobcats On Tuesday Night

After the Nettes’ pulled out the win, the Dragons came in looking for a big win of their own. Pickens, came into the game 1-1 in region play, while the LaFayette Ramblers came in undefeated on the season & the defending region champions.


The Dragons, got off to a nice start to open the 1st quarter. The Ramblers, closed the quarter on a run of their own and they led Pickens 23-15, going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, LaFayette continued their run from the 1st quarter. At the half, the Ramblers led the Dragons, 49-27.


LaFayette took this one last night, 99-34.

Dragons Fall To Cedartown In Tough Game, Face LaFayette Friday

Much like the Nettes’, the PHS varsity Dragons basketball team was looking for their 2nd straight win. After getting their first win of the season against Ridgeland last Friday, Pickens came in looking for back to back wins before heading back into region play.


In the 1st quarter, much like the girls game, it was the visitors that got off to the quick start. After one, the Bulldogs held a 19-9 lead. In the 2nd quarter, the offense for the Dragons flowed much better, they were able to outscore Cedartown 17-15, to cut the lead to 34-26, going into the break.


The 3rd quarter, was not very friendly to the home team. The Bulldogs outscored Pickens, 21-8, as they built up a 55-34 lead going to the 4th. When this one finished, the final score would be 74-47.

Dragons Earn 1st Win Of Season, Even Region Record

After the Nettes’ took care of business in the opening game, the Dragons looked to complete the sweep on the evening and notch their first win of the season. Pickens, has been in every game they’ve played so far, & looked to finally close one out, while getting a region win at the same time.


In a competitive opening frame, both Pickens & Ridgeland got things rolling for themselves. The Dragons, were able to grab the lead going to the 2nd, 15-11. This game looked like it was going to be tied heading into the break, but Brady Moore was able to corral a shot attempt and put it back up and in just before the buzzer sounded to give Pickens the 27-25 lead at the half.


The 3rd quarter saw the Dragon lead increase as Pickens outscored the Panthers 22-18, to take a 49-43 lead going to the 4th. In a back and forth final quarter, Ridgeland outscored the Dragons 26-23, but Pickens held on and picked up their first win of the season, 72-69. This also marks the first win for Mike Duffie as Dragon head coach.

Dragons Come Close, Fall To Heritage, Host Ridgeland On Friday

After the Nettes’ & Lady Generals wrapped up, it was time for the final game of the evening as the Dragons took on the Generals of Heritage. Pickens, came into the game looking to get their first win on the young season & get region play started off on the right foot.


In the 1st, the Generals found their shot from deep early. Heritage, took a 18-6 lead over the Dragons going to the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens was able to get some offense going, but the Generals also kept up their offensive output from the opening quarter. Going into the half, Heritage led the Dragons, 41-25.


The 2nd half saw much improvement for the Dragons as they were able to chip away at the Heritage lead. By outscoring the Generals 18-11 in the 3rd, Pickens found themselves down 52-43, going to the 4th. In the 4th, Pickens had the General lead down to as much as 7, & outscoring them in the 2nd half, 28-23, Heritage was able to hold on at the end & get the win, 64-53.

The Dragons, will finally make their 2018-19 home debut as they welcome the Ridgeland Panthers to the Dragons Den on Friday night. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.


Dragons Fall In Overtime To Bobcats, Face Heritage On Tuesday

After the Nettes’ & the Lady Cats finished up their game, it was time for the nightcap as the Dragons took on the Bobcats. Gilmer, had already won both of their games from Saturday & Monday, while Pickens looked to gain some momentum heading into region play next week.


The first quarter was highly contested with both teams finding buckets early. The Bobcats had a 4 point lead until the Dragons’ Brady Moore made a 3-point bucket right as the horn sounded to cut the Gilmer lead to 18-17, going to the 2nd. The 2nd quarter mirrored the 1st as it seemed both teams were evenly matched. Pickens outscored the Bobcats 13-10, to take a 30-28 lead into the break.


In the 3rd, the action was still high paced and neither team could not pull away. Gilmer outscored the Dragons slightly in the frame, 13-11, to tie things up at 41, going to the 4th. Things went down to the wire in the 4th as the Dragons took a 2-point lead late in the period. Not to be outdone however, the Bobcats were able to get a bucket just before the final horn rang to send us into overtime. In the overtime period, Gilmer was able to make free throws late to pull away and pick up the win, 67-57.

Dragons Fight Hard Against Hiwassee Dam, Face Bobcats This Evening

After the Nettes’ picked up their 2nd win of the young season, the Dragons looked to capture their first win as they took on the Hiwassee Dam Eagles out of North Carolina.


The 1st quarter was packed with action as both teams saw offensive success early on. Pickens, got the upper hand & took a 19-15 lead over the Eagles going to the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, Hiwassee Dam used a run to take the lead from the Dragons. Having outscored Pickens 18-12 in the frame, the Eagles grabbed the lead, 33-31, going to the break.


In a back and forth 3rd quarter, the Dragons made their own run to regain the lead from Hiwassee Dam. Using a slight 20-17 quarter advantage, Pickens found themselves ahead going to the 4th, 51-50. In the 4th, Hiwassee Dam was able to make shots late to take this one, 66-60.

The Dragons, will be in Ellijay again tonight as they wrap up the Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament as they take on the Gilmer Bobcats. Tip off is set for 7:30.


Dragons Fall In Close Contest With Fannin In Tip-Off Tournament Opener

After the thrilling win for the Nettes’, it was the Dragons turn to take the floor. This was the first game for the Dragons in this freshly new 2018-19 season. As you may know, the Dragons have a new coach on the sidelines in Mike Duffie, who comes to Pickens after several years at Dalton High School.


Pickens, came out of the game looking strong in their season opener. The Dragons used good offensive execution to build up a 13-8 lead after the 1st frame. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens at one point built up a double digit lead. The Rebels, used a late run to end the quarter, and cut the Dragon lead to 26-22, going to the half.


In the 3rd, Fannin carried over the momentum they built late in the 1st half to propel them to the lead using a 19-9 run. Going to the 4th, the Rebels led Pickens, 41-35. In the 4th, Pickens made a run by outscoring the Rebels 19-18, but it would not be enough. Fannin takes this one, 59-54.


Pickens, will be back in action on Monday afternoon at 4:30 pm when they face the Hiwassee Dam Eagles
