‘Nettes Winning Streak Ended By Lady Cats, Host Union On Tuesday

Last night, we had round three as the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team welcomed their rival, the Gilmer Lady Cats, to the Dragons Den for their 3rd meeting overall, & their 2nd region match up. Pickens, came into the game winners of 6 straight, & winners of the first two meetings with Gilmer earlier in the season.

 

In the first, it was a closely contested opening frame as was to be expected in a rivalry game such as this one. Both teams found offense early, but it was the ‘Nettes getting the upperhand going to the 2nd leading 17-13. The 2nd quarter, saw more of the same action as the first with the defense coming into play. The Lady Cats, outscored Pickens in the 2nd 10-9, to cut the ‘Nettes lead to 26-23, going into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the defense for Gilmer held the ‘Nettes offense in check, while the Lady Cat offense scored just enough in the quarter to take the lead from Pickens. Using a 13-6 run in the 3rd, Gilmer went into the 4th leading the ‘Nettes, 36-32. In the 4th, after going back and forth for most of the quarter, Gilmer, was able to hold on after some late free throws. The Lady Cats took this one, 46-40.

For Pickens, they still find themselves in 2nd in the region even after the loss at 6-2. The ‘Nettes, will be back in action on Tuesday as they will be home once again welcoming the Union County Lady Panthers for non-region action. Tip off is scheduled for 6 pm.

‘Nettes Earn Sweep Over LaFayette, Host Gilmer Friday Night

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the long trip up to LaFayette to take on the LaFayette Lady Ramblers in a 6-AAAA match up. Pickens, won the first meeting between these two teams, & came in winners of five in a row.

 

In the opening quarter, the defense for the ‘Nettes made it’s mark early on this game as it helped transition to buckets on the offensive end. Going to the 2nd, Pickens held a 14-4 advantage over LaFayette. In the 2nd, the defensive effort from the first quarter carried over, & the ‘Nettes were able to stretch their lead on the Lady Ramblers. Using a 20-10 quarter advantage, Pickens took a 34-14 lead into the break.

 

In the 2nd half, the ‘Nettes continued their solid play from the first two quarters. The 3rd quarter, would end up being the closest quarter in terms of scoring as Pickens outscored the Lady Ramblers 18-11, but still held a lead of 52-25 going to the 4th. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes finished the ball game strong with the 2nd unit & younger girls in. Pickens, would close the game on a 22-3 run. The ‘Nettes, picked up the win, 74-28.

Pickens, is now 14-2 overall on the season & now 6-1 in region play after last night’s win. They have now tied Northwest Whitfield in the win column with 6 victories. The ‘Nettes, will now turn their focus to Friday night as they will welcome their rivals from just up 515, the Gilmer Lady Cats, to the Dragons Den for a region meeting. Tip off is scheduled for 7 pm.

‘Nettes Get Non-Region Win Over Sonoraville

Yesterday, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team welcomed the Sonoraville Lady Phoenix out of 6-AAA to the Dragons den for a little non-region tussle. Coming into the ball game, the ‘Nettes, were winners of 4 straight, & looked to go 2-0 for the weekend.

 

Much like Friday night against Southeast Whitfield, the ‘Nettes got off to a fast start in the opening quarter. Pickens, raced out to an early 17-4 lead over the Lady Phoenix going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the ‘Nettes, added to their lead, using a 19-11 quarter run. Pickens, held a 36-15 lead going to the break.

 

In the 3rd, the Sonoraville offense got going. The Lady Phoenix outscored Pickens 14-8 in the 3rd, but the ‘Nettes still held the lead going to the 4th, 44-29. The 4th quarter, was a very competitive 8 minutes as both teams finished strong. Sonoraville, outscored the ‘Nettes 17-14 in the 4th, but Pickens held on to get their 5th straight win, 58-46.

Pickens, will take to the road this coming Tuesday as they head to LaFayette for region action. The ‘Nettes, will look for the season sweep over the Lady Ramblers, & stay in the 2nd spot in 6-AAAA play. Tip off scheduled for 6 pm.

‘Nettes Ring In New Year With Big Region Win

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team, welcomed the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders to the Dragons Den to begin the 2018 portion of the schedule. Pickens, was coming off an impressive end to 2017 as they won the Mountain Top Holiday Classic last week.

 

In the opening quarter, the ‘Nettes jumped out to a quick lead as they were hot from beyond the arc to start. Pickens would use a combination of solid offense, & tough defense to grab a 23-8 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, more of the same from the opening frame continued as the ‘Nettes would extend their lead over the Lady Raiders. Using an 18-10 quarter run, Pickens went into the locker room up 41-18 at the break.

 

In the 3rd, the momentum built in the 1st half by Pickens, carried over into the 2nd half as the offense would continue to find consistent good looks at the basket, & the defense stayed tough throughout. A 22-12 quarter run in the 3rd gave the ‘Nettes a 63-30 lead over Southeast Whitfield, going to the 4th. In the 4th, Pickens, got some younger girls in to gain experience on the varsity level, & to close out the ball game. The ‘Nettes, would take this one by a final of 69-36.

‘Nettes Cap Off 2017 With Holiday Classic Champioship

In a late afternoon match up, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made their way up to Blue Ridge one last time to take on the host team, the Fannin Lady Rebels, in the Girls championship game for the 2017 Mountain Top Holiday Classic. These two teams met in November for the Thanksgiving Tournament title held in Fannin & Pickens came away the victor.

 

The 1st quarter of this championship game was a tight one. Both teams found scoring, but it was a battle to get those points as both were sound defensively. The ‘Nettes held a 9-8 lead over Fannin going to the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd, it remained close as Pickens held a slim lead going into the break. The ‘Nettes used a 14-11 quarter advantage to increase their lead to 23-19 over the Lady Rebels.

 

It would start to get a little chippy in the 3rd quarter as there were multiple technical fouls handed out by officials. Through all of the physical play, Pickens outscored Fannin in the 3rd, 14-11, to take a 37-30 lead into the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, the Lady Rebels would try to rally. Every time Fannin would get within striking distance, the ‘Nettes would get a stop on defense, or make a shot. Pickens, was able to hold off the Lady Rebels to get the win 49-44, to capture the 2017 Mountain Top Holiday Classic.

The ‘Nettes, finish 2017 at 11-2, and will have most of next week to rest and prepare for their next game this coming Friday night when they welcome the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders to the Dragons Den for a region match up. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm.

Pickens’ Nets Their 10th Win Of The Season, Play Host Fannin For Tournament Title Tomorrow

This afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team headed back up to Fannin County High School to compete in the 2nd day of the 2017 Mountain Top Holiday Classic. Their opponent, the White County Lady Warriors, who defeated the Adairsville Lady Tigers yesterday to advance to the winners bracket. The ‘Nettes, knocked off the Christian Heritage Lady Lions yesterday to get to this game.

 

In the 1st quarter, the Lady Warriors of White County got out to a quick start using a hard pressing defense to create scoring chances. Pickens, got things going towards the end of the frame, but found themselves down 19-12 going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, things picked up on both ends of the floor for the the ‘Nettes. They used a 21-15 2nd quarter run to cut the White County lead down to 34-33, going into the break.

 

The 3rd quarter, saw Pickens take the lead from the Lady Warriors in an action packed frame. The ‘Nettes, off the strength of a 15-11 quarter advantage, took a 48-45 lead into the 4th. In the 4th, Pickens closed things out with a 14-9 run to get the win, 62-54.

‘Nettes Start Holiday Classic With Big Win Over Christian Heritage

Earlier this afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team, once again found themselves in Fannin competing in a tournament. This time, it was the Mountain Top Holiday Classic. Pickens, drew the 9-1 Christian Heritage Lady Lions for their first game. The ‘Nettes, were looking to end a two game skid after an 8-0 start to the season.

 

The first quarter, saw a back and forth frame as the two teams, who were a combined 17-3 coming into the game, traded bucket for bucket. The Lady Lions of Christian Heritage held a slim lead over the ‘Nettes going to the 2nd, 9-8. It would be more of the same in the 2nd quarter as neither team good gain a sizable lead. We would head to the break, all tied up at 19 a piece.

 

In the 3rd, the trend continued from the first half with both teams staying neck and neck with each other. Christian Heritage, used a 16-14 quarter advantage to take a slim 35-33 lead over Pickens into the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, the defense for the ‘Nettes would come up big & by using a 17-10 quarter run, Pickens stunned the Lady Lions & sealed a 50-45 win.

Mackenzie Hampton: 10 points, 3 assists, 10 rebounds, & 2 steals

With the win, Pickens will now play the White County Lady Warriors at 2 pm tomorrow for a spot in the championship game on Saturday.

Slow Starts Hinder ‘Nettes In Loss To Union

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled up to Blairsville to take on the Union Co. Lady Panthers in non-region action. Pickens, looked to get back on the winning track after a tough game Monday night against Northwest Whitfield.

 

The 1st quarter, started with the Lady Panthers jumping out to a quick lead. Pickens, picked things up as the quarter rolled along, but it would be Union who held a 13-7 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the ‘Nettes got things clicking on both ends. With the help of a 22-12 quarter run, Pickens took a 29-25 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, it was back and forth with the teams trading the lead several times. With an 11-8 quarter run, the Lady Panthers were able to regain the lead going to the 4th, 37-36. In the 4th, Union was able to hold off the ‘Nettes with a 20-17 quarter run, & key free throws to get the win, 57-53.
