STAY HOME! Pickens County Road Conditions Report

Local Sheriff and County road department authorities are urging the same battle cry — “Stay home unless it’s an emergency.”
Treacherous road conditions Monday morning are only predicted to get worse as ice, sleet and freezing rain exasperate conditions.
Pickens County Commissioner Robert Jones was manning the phones Monday morning and said the road department had three plows, two salt spreaders and two motor graders out since 10 p.m. Sunday evening. Emergency routes to the hospital and nursing homes were top priority. Pickens County ambulances are all four-wheel drive and equipped with tire chains, Jones said, able to maneuver any road.

A fire was reported on Sunrise Ridge early Monday morning and emergency vehicles responded to the situation and arrived back at 7:30 a.m. Jones said. At the time of this writing the GDOT had cleared 515 and were starting on Hwy 53.

Pickens County was equipped with 180 tons of ‘89s’ – a gravel material – and three pallets of calcium chloride.

“We’re hoping it’s enough.” Jones said.

Lt. Riggs at the Pickens County Sheriff’s department was monitoring radios Monday morning and said no accidents had been reported nor any power outages. Georgia Power could not be reached for comment.
