Storm Jumps Jasper

Pickens County experienced a storm that did severe damage to several buildings. No injuries were reported. According to Corporal William Lingerfelt of the Pickens County Sheriff’s Department, who supervised an inmate clean up crew on Jackson Street in Jasper, the heaviest concentration of damage was in the North end of Jasper.“I haven’t heard of any injuries,” Lingerfelt said. “There was some damage in the West (end of Jasper) but not as severe (as the North).”

Some businesses in downtown Jasper had roof damage including the Bargain Book Barn on Burnt Mountain Road. Entire sections of the roof were torn off. Gregg Allen, and his wife were able to secure most of the books, however, a few were damaged by moisture. Moore’s Furniture, on Main Street, also had roof damage. A telephone pole was knocked down, on Old Philadelphia Road, and was repaired by Windstream.

Jasper Banking Company’s sign was also out, a mere two months after being replaced. Jerry Edwards, Vice President of Loans, wanted it known that the bank was not taken over.

“Just because we have a blue tarp doesn’t mean we are being taken over,” Edwards said.
