How Would God Get Our Attention?

The tornadoes and storms of early May are still fresh on our minds. We can still drive by parts of North Georgia and see the destruction. Similar storms, just in the last month or so, have touched the lives and neighborhoods of people across the country. Hundreds of people are dead and thousands are affected. Could these storms be the judgments of God? Could Katrina have been a judgment of God? And, what about the other natural disasters that have plagued this country over the last decade or longer? We’ve had fires destroying millions of acres of forest and homes. We’ve had earthquakes, mudslides, and massive floods. In just the past few weeks floods have devastated parts of Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, and Louisiana.

If these disasters have been God’s judgments what would it take to get our attention? It is noteworthy that in a poll 52% of Christians do think these things are judgments. I haven’t heard anyone outside of church attribute them to God’s Hand. I have heard, as I certainly expected, these storms attributed to global warming. Of course, today, even blizzards are due to global warming (or the more PC, “climate change”).

Throughout Bible history, God used natural disasters and events to judge people and nations. Remember in Exodus chapters 7-11, Egypt is slammed with ten plagues including turning water to blood, lice, frogs, flies, thunder and fire, and locust.

In Scripture we see many other incidences of God’s judgments in the form of natural disasters. Who can forget the Flood (Genesis chapters 6-8). Then there was Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19). The entire chapter of Isaiah 24 talks about various forms of natural disasters sent from God.

I ask the question again, what will it take to get our attention? When will our nation turn back to God and His Word?

The answer does not reside in Congress or the Presidency. The Democrats cannot save us. The Republicans cannot save us. Only God can save us. Would you like to see our land healed and our national sins forgiven? My closing Scripture gives us the very simple, but often ignored answer.

II Chronicles 7:14: If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
