Pickens Dragonettes Summer Camp Report

The Pickens Dragonettes basketball teams hosted a basket camp. The camp featured middle school, freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity basketball teams from over two different school systems. The teams scrimmaged against each other in various schools in the Pickens County school system, from the elementary to the high school.The Dragonettes played well throughout the week. The varsity showcased good floor spacing on offense as well as a tendency to get to the basket and crash the offensive glass. On defensive they struggled against bigger teams on the low block; however, the defensive pressure from the guard positions led to plenty Pickens fast break baskets.

The young Dragonettes dominated most of the competition faced. Ninth grader Haley Kalson played well enough to get some time with the varsity at the point guard position.

Jasper middle school dominated most of the teams it faced, winning several games by double digits, including a 44-4 win as well as a 28-0 first half.

The Dragonettes may see some fresh faces on varsity, with so much talent in the younger ranks. The outlook for girls’ basketball in Pickens County seems to have a bright future.
