Pickens Animal Shelter Re-opens Tuesday

The Pickens Animal Shelter reopened Tuesday, August 16th after a 12-day quarantine due to parvovirus. An outbreak of the deadly canine parvovirus temporarily closed the facility earlier this month, after the shelter took in three German Shepherd pups found by the roadside. Shelter staff members said the puppies seemed fine at first, but parvo has an incubation period of five to 10 days and sure enough, the puppies started showing symptoms within a week. The shelter responded by immediately declaring a quarantine. However, Animal Control Officer, Deputy Joey Hancock said several other puppies had to be put down due to the outbreak, although he added he couldn’t say how many animals were euthanized.Hancock said there are currently about 160 cats and dogs at the shelter and all are in need of good homes. When asked if the staff was having any luck with its adoption program this summer, Hancock said it was “hit or miss.” He also expressed concern that after the parvo outbreak, citizens might be reluctant to adopt a pet. While he understands their concern, Hancock said the remaining animals are healthy — they just need good homes.

Parvo is a seriously contagious and deadly disease spread through fecal matter. It will eat away at the animal’s intestinal lining, causing bacteria to spread throughout its body and bloodstream. Symptoms of the virus include, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of weight, and lethargy. Puppies seem to be at highest risk, but parvo can show up in both dogs and cats.

There are a series of vaccinations to prevent it. Depending on the pet’s age, the animal will need anywhere from one to four shots. In Pickens County, the average cost of a single parvo vaccination is about $20. However, many local vets say they will work with a pet owner to help get their animals vaccinated.

You may want to seriously consider getting your pet treated. Hancock said parvo has been widespread this summer, due to high humidity and Georgia large homeless pet population. He said about 26 shelters around Georgia are currently under quarantine, primarily due to parvo.
