Pickens Seeks Pictures for History Project

During the January Commissioner’s meeting last week, Commissioner Robert Jones introduced a county history project currently in the works. Headed up by Land Development Control Officer Rodney Buckingham and Right-a-way and Utilities Specialist John Nicholson, the project seeks to preserve the names and photographs of past county commissioners, once called ordinaries.

“We’ve been assigned to get pictures of all these individuals back to 1853,”

Buckingham said. He added that they have collected the names for all the commissioners and ordinaries from present all the way back to 1854.

Buckingham told FYN that the finished product will likely result in framed photographs of each commissioner from 1853 to present. When the collection is complete, the framed photos will hang in the commissioner’s conference room in the Pickens County Administrative building, he said. According to Buckingham, the other option is creating a plaque with the names of the commissioners and hanging the plaque in the courthouse, when renovations are complete, but he said this second option was less likely than the first option.

In a recent conversation with FYN, Buckingham said he has all of the photographs as far back as 1916. However, he stressed he needs the photos from 1916 back to 1853.

“If anyone has any picture like that (from 1853 through 1916) we’d be most appreciative,”
