Dragons Struggle to Score Runs, Fall 13-2 to Gilmer

The Pickens Dragons’ baseball team had a tough outing against bitter rival Gilmer on Thursday afternoon, as the home Dragons struggled offensively and lost to the Bobcats by the final score of 13-2.
Pickens looked primed for a big game in the bottom of the first inning, as a groundout by Tanner Brumby followed by a flyout by Eric Decker one batter later brought in two runs and tied the game at 2 after a full inning of play. The Dragons had an excellent opportunity to score in the next inning as well, but a groundout with the bases loaded and two outs ended any hopes of taking the lead.

One of the turning points in this game came in the top of the fourth inning, as a heads-up play by a Gilmer baserunner allowed the visiting Bobcats to tie the game at 2 right before the Dragons executed a inning-ending double play. Immediately following this play was a delay due to the weather, which lasted approximately thirty-five minutes.

Good pitching by both Dylan Childers of Pickens and Marlin Hensley of Gilmer led to a scarcity of runs early on in this game, but a flyout to right field by Gilmer shortstop Tucker Plouffe in the top of the fifth inning was enough to bring a Bobcat home and give Gilmer a 3-2 advantage in the game. The time off the mound due to the storm seemed to greatly hinder the play of Pickens, as the inning following the stoppage of play saw the Bobcats increase their lead again and again.

By the time the fifth inning ended, the Dragons had saw three pitchers take the mound and the close game get blown wide open. In the end, Pickens lost the game by the final score of 13-2 after six innings of play.

Second baseman Bryan Morris led the team in hitting with a single and a walk in three plate appearances. Also making his presence known at the plate was Tanner Brumby, who had a single and an RBI in the loss.

Although the Dragons’ pitching staff can’t help but be disappointed with the loss, they did have some good outings on the night. Starter Dylan Childers looked in control for a majority of the game, giving up just six hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Coming in as relievers were Taylor Logan and Bryan Morris, who combined for a strikeout and just two hits in an inning of work.
