Dragons Crush Cedartown on Thursday, Fall Short Against Lafayette on Friday

The Pickens Dragons’ baseball team went .500 in their two games on Thursday and Friday, as the team defeated the Cedartown Bulldogs 9-0 and then lost to the Lafayette Ramblers 4-0 the following day.
The Dragons could do no wrong against the Bulldogs on Thursday, as the game was tight until Pickens brought in five runs in the fourth inning to break the game wide open.

Just as the offense got the job done in the game, so did pitcher Joe Powell, who continued his hot streak by giving up only four hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work. Powell also got the job done at the plate, going two for three with two RBIs.

Pickens faced off with Lafayette the following day with hopes of extending its winning streak to four games, but great pitching by the Ramblers left the Dragons’ hot offense ice cold. When it was all said and done, a double by catcher Tanner Brumby in the bottom of the fourth inning turned out to be the only hit for the Dragons in the game.

Although the loss was disappointing for the Dragons, there were several notable efforts given in this game. Pitchers Eric Justice and Dylan Childers combined for 124 pitches in the game with 81 strikes and only four runs allowed, all of which came before the fifth inning. Left fielder Jake Dean also showed off his arm in the top of the sixth inning, gunning down a would-be Lafayette run at the plate to end the inning.

Pickens plays again on Monday, as they travel to Ellijay to take on the Gilmer Bobcats at 5:55. The team’s next home game will be on Thursday, April 12th, when the Dragons take on the Heritage Generals. This game is part of Breast Cancer Awareness Night, so the team hopes that all who attend show their support for those who fight the disease.
