The district one election for commissioner ended in a run-off Tuesday night between Republican Candidates Marty Callahan and Jerry Barnes. The newly created district one position will be one of three offices of the new Pickens Board of Commissioners. Former Sole Commissioner Robert Jones, running for the new chair position on the Republican ballot, defeated challenger Wesley Weaver, where Jones won 74.07 percent of the vote, while Weaver came up with only 25.93 percent. Republican Candidate for the district two-position Becky Denny defeated challenger Jerry “Jabo” Patterson. Denny won 59.23 percent of the vote and Patterson, 40.77 percent.
Even after the August 21st run-off, though, the new board will not be complete. The winner of the Barnes-Callahan election will run against District One Democratic Candidate Sally Bradley, who was unopposed in Tuesday election. As such, the winner of the Bradley and Barnes-Callahan contest will fill the third position of the board. Currently, Robert Jones will act as chairman and Becky Denny will fill the district two commissioner spot.
The new Board of Commissioners will take office in January 2013.
