Suspicious Items Located – Updated From Pickens Sheriff Office

While serving a Superior Court Judges Temporary Protective Order at a residence on Talking Rock Highway near Jasper Georgia, Deputies discovered explosive components in the home. Due to the nature of the items found, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations was contacted to assist. In addition to contacting the GBI, a Bomb Squad from Floyd County Police was requested to assist as well. Bomb Technicians from the FBI field office in Rome Georgia accompanied them to the scene.

During a thorough search of the residence, tubes of an industrial explosive, were discovered along with caps and wires that would be used to detonate the explosives. In addition, 6 different weapons were found. Included were shotguns, rifles and a loaded handgun.

At this time, the home owner is being questioned by agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, who are working jointly with the Pickens Sheriff’s Office in the investigation. The home has been cleared and all explosive devices were removed by the Bomb Squad.

The homeowner, Steve Burgess (white male, age 56) has been arrested for possession of Methamphetamines, but no charges related to the explosives have been taken at this time. Once his book in is complete at the Pickens County Adult Detention Center, we will release it as well.

As soon as information becomes available, it will be released.

During the execution of a Court Order on Talking Rock Highway (approximately 1/4 mile north of Annie’s Restaurant), some suspicious items were located that could indicate the presence of explosives.

As a precaution, the GBI, Floyd County Police Dept Bomb Squad and FBI Bomb Technicians have been requested and residents in the immediate area have been asked to remain in their homes until the items have been safely removed from the area.

This is still an active investigation at this time and additional information will be sent as soon as possible.
