Pickens Picks Up Win, Despite Digging Hole Early

The Pickens High School Dragonettes softball team hosted the Lady Spartans of West Hall. While the Lady Spartans went to war early, jumping to a 9-1 lead halfway through the third inning, the Dragonettes turned up the heat, with a scoring onslaught that reversed an eight run deficit and turned it into a 20-10 Dragonettes “Mercy Rule” win.The Lady Spartans drew first blood with a lead-off home run on the first pitch of the game. Before the inning ended, the Dragonettes faced a 3-0 deficit; however, an RBI single in the bottom of the first cut the lead to 3-1 going into the second inning.

The Lady Spartans looked to walk away with the game early, as the second inning began with four straight walks, and ended with West Hall leading, 8-1, the Lady Spartans added another run in the top of the third, increasing the lead to 9-1.

A lead-off home run in the bottom of the third cut the lead to 9-2. The lead was cut to 9-3 steal of home on a passed ball.

The bottom of the fourth inning saw the Dragonettes catch fire, as Pickens picked up 12 runs, turning a 9-3 deficit into a 15-9 lead. The Dragonettes continued the offensive onslaught, while holding the Lady Spartans to only one more run.

The game was called in the bottom of the fifth, due to “Mercy Rule” allowing Pickens to pick up the 20-10 victory.
