“Attendance Works” Provides Goal for Pickens Schools

Pickens County Schools are participating in an unusual competition. While sports dominate thoughts on school competitions, this is an attendance event in which a one-of-a-kind trophy will be the prize (along with bragging rights).

Several counties committed to the event, named “Attendance Works”. Other than Pickens, Gordon, Floyd, Walker, Bartow, and Murray Counties have thrown their names into the hat. Student advocate leaders are in charge of promoting and maintaining attendance percentages for the duration of the promotion which began with the first school day in September and finishes at month’s end.

This morning at the Pickens County Government building, a proclamation of participation was adopted. Several dignitaries as well as school students attended the signing, excited to get the contest rolling.

Pickens County Attendance Officer Shelley Cantrell said,

“We’ve already sent out an ‘all-call’ announcement to parents and students. We encourage students to be in school every day.”
