Pickens Picks Up Big Win Over Bobcats in JV Game

The Pickens High School Dragons junior varsity football team picked up a big win over the rival, Gilmer High Bobcats. The home team Dragons, clobbered the “Cats” 32-8.Pickens picked up the lead early, with a touchdown return on the opening kickoff for an 8-0 lead after a successful two point conversion, just 19 seconds into the game. The visitors responded with 56 yard drive that tied the game and took 5:55 of game time.

On the ensuing drive, the Dragons stayed hot. After starting the drive on the Pickens 40 yard line, Pickens moved the ball down to the Gilmer 30 before converting a fourth and three with a 19 yard run by Jerry Nelson. Nelson eventually scored on a one yard touchdown run. After another successful two point conversion, Pickens led 16-8 with 38.5 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Dragons’ defense held Gilmer on a fourth down attempt for a turnover on downs on the next drive, allowing the offense to take over with 7:01 left in the first half from the Pickens 29. A 44 yard run from Nelson moved the ball to the Gilmer 28 yard line.

One play later, Pickens appeared to pick up another touchdown, on a quick screen to Walker Lawrence, however, the play was called back due to a holding penalty. The Dragons’ offense eventually stalled, turning the ball over on downs at the Gilmer two yard line. The half ended with Pickens leading 16-8.

The Gilmer offense took the field first in the second half; however, a fumble recovery by the Dragons’ defense put Pickens place at midfield. Seven plays later, Nelson scored again on a five yard touchdown run. The Dragons’ lead stood at 24-8 with 5:30 left in the third after another successful two point conversion.

Pickens picked up one more touchdown in the fourth, securing the 32-8 victory.
