Pickens County finances; public budget hearing set

At the most recent Pickens Board of Commissioners meeting, financial department employee Jason Segers presented the state of affairs for county budgets through the month of October. It should be at 83.33 percent but stands at 79.47 overall.As is generally the case, some departments came in under budget while others came in over. Revenue collection for taxes was under 50 percent. It was explained as attributable to unpaid taxes that will be due in December which should bring the revenue back up quickly before closing the budget at year’s end. Total revenues sat at $11,811,375.

Public works saw dramatic overages due to storm damage earlier in the year and unanticipated paving needs. The finance department stated those overages should equalize back to normal levels as the year closes out.

MATS is already past their yearly allotted budget and planning and development has drawn close. Either or both may require budget amendments before 2013 can be closed out.

In other financial news, the proposed 2014 budget was approved for advertisement. There will be a public hearing on the proposed budget Thursday, December 5 at 9:30 a.m. in which the public may be heard on their thoughts regarding it. After that, the board should hold a vote to finalize the figures on their regularly scheduled board meeting date of December 21 at 5:30 p.m.
