Pickens Prevails against Excel Christian Academy

The Pickens Dragons and Dragonettes returned to their winning ways on Saturday, as both squads defeated their counterparts from Excel Christian Academy in Cartersville. The first game of the afternoon featured the girls’ game, which turned ugly quickly for Excel. The Nettes were unstoppable in the first quarter of play, dominating Excel in all phases of the game to outscore their opponent 13-2. It was much of the same for Pickens in the second quarter, and at halftime the Dragonettes held a comfortable 33-11 lead.

The Dragonettes would maintain this lead through the remaining two quarters of play, resulting in a commanding 71-25 victory for the road squad.

Sarah Smith had an outstanding game for Pickens against Excel, leading the team in both points and rebounds with twenty-one points and ten rebounds in the contest. Also getting the job done for the Dragonettes were Savannah Laney (11 points & 4 rebounds), Autumn Young (10 points & 1 assist), and Haley Kalson (9 points & 7 rebounds).

Once the girls’ game had concluded, the boys took to the court. Excel put up quite the fight with Pickens in the first quarter, leading to the Dragons trailing by a 14-12 margin. However, Pickens woke up in the second period to the tune of twenty-two points, allowing Pickens to hold a 34-25 lead at halftime.

The Dragons would remain on their hot streak in the third quarter (twenty-four points) as well as the fourth (18 points), and although Excel did what they could to keep up the pace, their struggles to outrebound Pickens ultimately allowed the Dragons to prevail by the final score of 76-55.

Jacob Stephens led the way as far as scoring was concerned, posting seventeen points in the victory. Stephens also had six rebounds and one assist in the game.

Leading the Dragons in rebounding on this afternoon was Clay Wigington, who finished the contest with nine rebounds. Wigington also had fifteen points as well as one block in the game.

Four Dragons ended the game with at least thirteen points in the win–Stephens, Tanner Brumby, Wigington, and Shannon Brooks.

The Dragonettes and Dragons return to their home court on Tuesday, as they take on the Dawson County Lady Tigers and Tigers. The girls’ contest is set to tip-off at 6:00 p.m.
