Jean Lee Cain Payne: Obituary

Friends were saddened to learn of Jean Payne’s death on December 21, 2014 following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Jean was born in Arlington, Virginia and was a talented artist, interior designer, realtor, home designer and builder. She was employed with the former Northside Realty and built homes in the Saddle Creek and Brookfield West Subdivisions in the Roswell area. She studied art at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland. She later taught art both privately and through community education classes sponsored by Lockheed of Marietta. She won awards for her silhouette portrait art. Jean was a long-time Big Canoe resident, moving here with her husband Chet in 1991. Jean designed their home and was the builder. It was the last home she built. Chet died in 2010 and he and Jean had been married 60 years.

Jean enjoyed golf and tennis and she and her late husband were briefly involved with The Friendship Force. Both were active members of Big Canoe Chapel. Another of Jean’s loves was her dog Toto, who now lives with her daughter Jennifer Moore in Jasper.

Jean is survived by three daughters: Jennifer Moore (Matt) of Jasper, Jill Butler (Michael) of Cumming and Starr Lindsey (Mark) of Marietta. Surviving also are two sisters: Jane Kalins of Maryland and Edna Mae Kincaid of Massachusetts; brother-in-law Randolph Payne of Arlington, Virginia and sister-in-law Amanda Hall of Scottsville, Virginia. Grandchildren are: Mary Shertenlieb, Amanda Forster, John Dunlap (Carol Ann), Harry Forster III, Payne Lindsey, Banks Lovett, Chesler Lindsey and Mason Lindsey and great-grandchildren Henry Chester Shertenlieb, Maxwell Gary Shertenlieb, Lindsey Grace Lovett and Chiles Alaina Lovett. Many beloved nieces, nephews and their children also survive. In addition to her husband Chester “Chet” Payne, Jean was predeceased by three siblings, Byron B. Cain, Jr., John W. Cain and Nancy L. Nesbitt.

A Memorial Mass will be 11 AM Monday December 29, 2014 at Our Lady of Mountains Catholic Church with Father Charles Byrd officiating.
