Hermann Hits Walkoff Homerun As The Dragons Get Second Straight Win

This afternoon, the Dragons varsity baseball team hosted the Dawson County Tigers at Dragons Field. While there wasn’t as many runs scored as their game on Wednesday, today’s game had the same amount of drama and excitement.Junior Tyler Garner took the bump for the Dragons and needed 13 pitches to get out of the opening inning. Dawson countered in the bottom of the inning as Pickens went down in order. This game turned into a pitchers duel for the first three innings of this ball game.

In the bottom of the 4th, Junior Zack Hermann led off with a double and then scored after Senior Cam Gregory reached on a bunt single and took second on a wild throw to first. The Dragons added to their 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 5th when Junior Walker Lawrence singled, then advanced to 2nd after a sacrifice hit by Sophomore Wyatt Gooch, then came around to score after Freshman Joseph Gossett doubled. After holding the Tigers scoreless through five innings, Senior Travis Seay came in for Garner looking to protect the Dragons 2-0 lead.

Dawson were able to tie things up at 2 in the top half of the 6th. In the bottom half of the inning, Sophomore Travis Huffman singled, Huffman then reached 3rd on an error as Seay took second on that same error, Lawrence then singled to drive in Huffman to retake the lead, 3-2. In the top of the 7th, the Tigers were able to take their first lead of the ball game, 4-3, aided by an infield single and a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the 7th, Gooch reached base by drawing a walk. Gossett grounded out and Sophomore Zack Moore flew out leaving it all up to Herman. With two out, and two strikes, Hermann stepped up to the plate and sent a shot over the left field fence to give the Dragons the win, 5-4 their second straight walkoff win.

Joseph Gossett went 1-3 with a double and an RBI

Garner, Seay, and Gregory held the Tigers to 4 runs on 12 hits

The Dragons were effective on offense scoring 5 runs on 6 hits

Pickens will be back in action tomorrow morning at 11:30 as they welcome the Coosa High School Eagles to Dragons Field. Next week, the Dragons will take to the road on Monday to face the North Hall Trojans, and then will face the Trojans at home on Wednesday, then travel to Towns County on Thursday to take on the Indians.
