Nunsense Sings Out in Pickens

The Tater Patch Players are presenting Nunsense to the Pickens area for one more weekend.

A musical that stands a little out of the ordinary as it involves audience participation. These Nuns work to perform a variety show in order to raise money to bury four dead sisters of the convent which were killed by a meal served by another nun. It may seem convoluted at first, but this all-female cast pulls together quite the show.

At several points the cast actually pulls into the audience to involve you as the “audience” of the variety show. Though a risk to involve some people who might be shy at being put on the spot, the cast sets up each involvement to draw out the silliness of the situation as they ad lib and improv these moments.

More than improv, though, the show sets up several scenes to highlight just how much trouble a nun can get into in 2 hours at a local gym. From a nun who ‘discovers’ a bit of drugs to an amnesiac trying to remember, well anything really, every character brings a little humor in their own way.

Though, it was Sister Robert Anne who grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go. A bit of an instigator, the character holds so much flavor as the comedy allows actor Vanessa Stancil to draw out the bad girl of the convent to stand in juxtaposition to the stereotype of a regular nun. She creates some of the funniest parts of the show with her interactions with her co-stars, adding a certain spark to her scenes and making you wonder what will happen next.

If possible, sit closer to the front as sometimes the songs and spoken word can get a little hard to hear over the music, and sometimes over the laughter in the theater. Especially since some of those lines could win you fabulous Catholic prizes. Sister Amnesia picked them out so don’t hold your breath.

Take time this weekend to get down to the Tater Patch Players Theater and don’t be shy with the nun cast of Nunsense. Check online for tickets and showtimes at Tater Patch Players and get ready for the upcoming production of, one of my favorites, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, opening September 18.
