Mr. Howard Richard Marran: Obituary

Howard Richard Marran, better known as Dick or ‘Ol Dad’ passed away on June 18, 2016. He will be sorely missed by many. Although he was born in White Plains, NY on August 24, 1938, Dick became a “Southerner” by choice and spent the last several decades of his life first in Marietta, and later in his beloved community of Bent Tree.

He graduated from Rutgers University in 1960, the first of his family to attain a college degree, much to the pride of his parents, Howard and Moira Marran. He served in the Navy aboard the heavy cruiser, U.S.S. Newport News during the early sixties and married his wife Mary Irene nee~ Riendeau in 1963, whereupon he began his career at Eastman Kodak. A family quickly followed, with three daughters, and the Marrans were fortunate enough to live in some wonderful places around the country-Rochester, NY,  Chicago, San Francisco and ending up in the Atlanta area where Dick retired in 1992 after more than 30 years with Kodak. He spent much of his leisure playing ALTA and doubles tennis in his neighborhoods of Princeton Lakes and Princeton West where he developed many life-long friendships.  In 1997 as empty nesters, Dick and Mary moved to the mountains of Jasper, GA, where they both were avid volunteers in their community. They also enjoyed travelling the country and much of the world, always happy to return to their home in Bent Tree. With Mary’s death in 2011, Dick continued to help with various committees and enjoyed his daily walks with his dog, Dontae.

He is survived by daughter, Michele  and son-in-law Tim McLain, daughter Kathleen and son-in-law Ron Peterson, daughter Diane, sister Gail Griffin and brother-in-law Harry, as well as six grandchildren, Christopher, Ali, Michael, and Daniel McLain, Gage and Savana Stewart,  great-grandchild Chad McLain, and many nieces and nephews.

The celebration of Dick’s life and legacy will be held at Roper Funeral Home in Jasper, GA on Saturday, June 25. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. followed immediately by a ceremony in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home. After the ceremony all are welcome to attend a reception at Club Tamarack in Bent Tree, Jasper GA (Little Pine Mountain).
