Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Walker County to take on the Lady Ramblers of LaFayette in the opening game of region 6-AAAA play. Pickens, coming off of a good showing at the annual Thanksgiving Tournament last week, looked to get region play started off on a good note.
In the 1st, the ‘Nettes jumped out to a quick lead. Pickens used a nice offensive start to jump out to a 23-10 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the ‘Nettes continued to pour it on using defense to lead to offense, outscoring the Lady Ramblers, 17-4 in the frame. Pickens led LaFayette, 40-14 at the break.
The success the ‘Nettes had in the 1st half, carried over to the 3rd quarter, as they continued to add to their lead. Using a 19-9 run, Pickens held a 59-23 advantage going to the 4th. The final in this one would be 64-26. The ‘Nettes are now 4-2 on the season and now 1-0 in region play.
Leading the way for the ‘Nettes were:
Mykenzie Weaver: 19 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, & 1 block
Mackenzie Hampton: 10 points, 4 rebounds, & 1 steal
Tessa Duncan: 8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, & 2 blocks
Taylor Wigington: 6 points, 5 assists, & 5 rebounds
Ashley Nelson: 6 points, 7 rebounds, & 1 steal
Shelby Cook: 5 points, 2 assists, 4 rebounds, & 2 blocks
Autumn Young: 3 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, & 3 steals
The ‘Nettes will be back in the Dragons Den for the 1st time in a long time it seems as they host the Gilmer Lady Cats on Friday. Gilmer is 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in region play after their 57-50 win over the Lady Panthers of Ridgeland last night. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
