Effie McWhorter Norris, age 96 of Jasper, passed away December 29, 2016. She was born October 29, 1920, in Pickens County, Georgia.
Mrs. Norris is survived by three nieces whom she affectionately referred to as “her girls”: Patricia Atkinson (Neil) of Jasper and Buena Vista, Colorado, Mary Jane Reid (Gerald) of Jasper, and Marty Beaver (John) of Jasper. Other surviving nieces and nephews are Gladys Harris, Faye Weeks, Ruth Roland, Betty Mullinax (Glenn), Betty Sue Lebow (Fritz), John Moorhead, and Mary Boden (Bob). She is also survived by many great- and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jabie W. Norris, her parents, John and Mary McWhorter, and eight siblings.
Mrs. Norris was a member of First Baptist Church of Jasper and the Willing Workers Sunday School class. For many years, she assisted her husband, Jabie, the county extension agent, with the 4H events. She often did needlework crosses and other Christian symbolic keepsakes that were distributed to the children at Children’s Sermon time. She volunteered at Georgia Mountains Hospice for 15 years and made 2,000 needlework bookmarks for grieving families. She also volunteered her time and talent at The Joy House. She was employed at several different places, the last two jobs being at Pickens Footwear and Pickens Tech School (now Chattahoochee Technical College).
Visitation will be at Roper Funeral Home on Sunday, January 1, from noon until 6:00 p.m., and Monday, January 2, from 10:00 a.m. until the service. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 2, at 2:00 pm, at Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Reverend Greg Pope and Reverend David Stuart officiating. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no graveside service.
